My Mum has just been diagnosed with Breast Cancer

Hi all

Just looking for some advice/support to support my Mum.  My very, very fit 80 year old Mum has just been diagnosed with BC.  She has a small stage 2 lump and has been giving Letrozole to take.  She has the option of a lumpectomy but She has been told that no surgery is happening for 3 months.  The Doctor and Support Nurse were both fairly evasive about why this was but we believe its because of Covid 19. We were both in shock at the diagnoise and I spent most of the session calming my Mum down and reassuring her that the Doctors where doing this for the best clinical reasons but in retrospect I am confused as to why there is this delay.

Mum is worried that Letrozole won't work and three months down the line the cancer will have grown and be harder to treat.   My question is:Are lumpetomy surgeries being stopped elsewhere around the country?

Thanks in advances for any support.

  • Hi Janebeth60,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm very sorry to read about your Mum - I hope you're getting on OK although I'm sure this must be incredibly difficult, especially with the uncertainty around treatment. To be honest I'm not too sure why the surgery would have been delayed. There may be a bit of added waiting time at the hospital based on everything that's happened in recent months, and there may be a bit of a backlog of appointments. Also each hospital and area will be different.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses to discuss anything, who may be better able to advise, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

    Hi Janebeth,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum. There have been some changes to Cancer protocols during this pandemic, but, like Ben, I see no need for a three month delay. My own Mum had breast cancer and I have now had 2 bouts myself in the past 11 years. In this time, I have discovered that we sometimes have to fight for the care that we need. Cancer can grow more slowly in elderly people, so hopefully, this delay shouldn't have any adverse effect on her.

However, if I were in your shoes, I would phone your Mum's GP and ask him/her why this should be.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.
    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
