Dad diagnosed with advanced cancer

Hi, I'm just wondering how people are coping finding out their parent has cancer. I've recently found out my dad has advanced oesphagus cancer which has spread into both lungs and they think it has spread more as they are taking more tests. I'm really really struggling right now and finding it really hard to cope, I feel so heartbroken that this is happening to my dad.

  • Hi, it's kind of the same with me :( I was in Y5 when my dad got cancer. He got diagnosed with throat cancer even though he didn't even smoke or drink. I haven't heard his voice in so so long. Since 5 years.. it's been heart breaking. I got no recordings of him talking. Now I'm in Y10. It's had a huge impact on me. I was wondering if It's possible for it to pass onto me as my dad had it. I hope it does, I don't deserve anything..

  • Hi Chal212

I am so sorry to read your story sending a massive virtual hug.

My dad has had the same diagnosis, he has oesophagus cancer that has spread into the liver and lympth nodes, the letter also mentioned a lung nodule that we knew nothing about. I felt the exact same as you, that how could this be happening, and what do i do?

I promise things will get better, my dad has been coping well with the chemo. Just take one day at a time is the best advice, try not to look to far ahead. speand some time with your dad and try not to be upset in front of him, that was the hardest part forms but only made my dad feel worse. Really hope you're ok Xx

  • Hello, so sorry to hear that. It's awful isn't it. I'm only 18 myself and have a 4 month old so all this news is so overwhelming. I will have your dad in my prayers tonight

  • I can totally relate to your situation.

My mum has gone from being relatively healthy to having stage 4 cancer in the space of 5-months (esophagus / liver / stomach). They told her to self isolate thinking the symptoms were Covid-19.

Sometimes I'm still in shock and think someone will say it will be all okay.

  • Hi Charl202

So sorry as I've only received this reply!
    How is your dad now?
I'm so sorry that you are going through this! Especially when you have a little one too! :(

    Hope you're doing ok x

  • That is very sad but absolutely not your fault. Cancer is not infectious and no one knows why some of get it. Of course you deserve a good life but it is harder for you than most of your friends I expect. Cancer does teach us to value our friends and family as you and I know, we are not sure how long they will be well. I hope you have good friends at school and family to talk to and who will support you.

No one was to blame for your Dad's illness and he would want you to enjoy your life.

    Best wishes

    Ronnie

  • Hi!

my dad was very unwell having chemo, as he is on the strongest he can have.. they found a blood clot in his lung and he's also had a few blood transfusions and had to stay in hospital a few nights.. he is feeling better now and we have had good news that the tumour in his lung has shrunk by 50%!! Such amazing news but I still just keep thinking of the worst... I just want someone to pinch me and say it's all a dream seeing how my dads changed so much in the space of 6 months is heartbreaking xx hope you are all well
