Pain after mastectomy and reconstruction

I had a mastectomy and reconstruction (silicone implants and mesh) two weeks ago. It's healing well and there's no sign of infection.

But I'm still feeling pain. There's a dull ache over most of the breast, my underarm area feels bruised, if I move forward or to the side too quickly, or breathe in too sharply, there's a stabbing pain where I can feel the mesh moving. The skin feels strange especially in my underarm - I have to tuck the fabric of my clothing under my armpit as it feels really unpleasant if the skin rubs together. Moving about or walking makes everything worse and it's hard to concentrate on anything.

The breast cancer nurse flat out refused to believe me when I asked for stronger pain relief. She said I can't still be in pain this long after the op, dismissed it as discomfort and told me to stick with over the counter medications, which aren't helping. I spoke to a Macmillan nurse who also said it was unusual to still feel pain after this long, although he was more sympathetic and less rude and dismissive.

It's really getting me down. I feel like a freak and feel very isolated.

Has anyone else had similar experience?

  • Hello Evie123

I'm sorry to hear that you're still struggling with some pain and discomfort after your recent surgery. It's good to hear that things are healing well and you've no signs of infection after such a big operation.

It's unfortunate that you've not felt particularly supported by your breast care nurse. Do you have a follow up appointment booked with the Consultant? If you don't, or it's still a few weeks away yet, then I'd suggest giving your GP a call. Explain that you are still having some pain despite taking regular over the counter medication as they may be able to help with something until you see the Consultant.

I certainly don't think that you're alone in experiencing this. Remember that lots of the nerves will have been impacted by your surgery and as things start to heal it's natural that you will get some odd and, at times, unpleasant sensations. It is still very early days and hopefully over the coming weeks and months you'll start to feel more comfortable.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses then please do give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,
