Brother diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer PLEASE HELP

Hi I hope someone could help me here please, I'm not sure if I'm in the right place I only joined yesterday. My brother is 45, non smoker, drinks very little was dignosed with stage 4 cancer of the rectum and liver at the start of lockdown. He has had a bag put in, he has also recieved radio and chemo and Wednesday (Tomorrow) he will have his first major surgery to remove part of his liver.

He told me he will need further chemo before the next operation. I am in the UK he is in Ireland so I can't visit even if I could I don't think I should be anywhere near him right now without going into a two week lockdown before I see him which I am more than happy to do. I offered to go back at the very begining but he has said to wait as the family will need help later he is married with three young kids.

I have looked online and the answers are so mixed it would be great to have some honest straight answers. I am relient on my brother telling me everything I don't want to keep asking questions as I feel he is going through enough. From what he has told me and from speaking with our aunt and uncle it sounds as though he took a beating from his chemo afew times I couldn't even understand what he was saying as his mouth was so badly damaged from sores.

Any advise at all would be greatly appreciated, many thanks you in advance for any help.

  • Hi Limerick18,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm very sorry to read about your brother and I can only imagine how difficult this situation must be.

Unfortunately no-one will really be able to advise on what's going on with your brother, as it's only his medical team who can do that. So it sounds like keeping in touch with him and letting him know you're there for support may be the best thing.

I see you've had a reply from one of our nurses on your other similar post and so there's probably not much more I can add to that, other than to say that this forum is here for support if you need it - or if you simply want to write things down every now and then.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
