Bowel cancer spread to abdominal cavity

Hi there,

My mum who has just turned 67 was recently diagnosed with bowel cancer and today was told that it has spread to her abdominal cavity with a small patch on her liver and potentially the lungs although they aren't sure about the lungs and are not overly concerned about that at the moment. She has been offered chemotherapy and is to have a stoma fitted next week to avoid any bowel obstruction in addition to having biopsies taken from the abdominal cavity.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of dealing with this? I believe that there is a potential surgical option called cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC but this is only for carefully selected candidates (we are looking into this at the moment).

It has all come as a major shock as she did not have any major symptoms at all and it was discovered during a colonoscopy after she had a pain in her right side for a relatively short period of time. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum although I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's recent diagnosis. It's understandable that it's been a shock for you all but it's positive to hear that there are treatment options for your Mum and that at the moment the Consultant isn't too concerned about the possible areas on her lung. I hope that her surgery this week goes smoothly.

Hopefully some of our members who have similar experiences will post to say Hello and share any advice they may have but if you'd like to talk to one of our nurses then please do give them a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
