Thy3f

My daughter recently had 2 FNA with the 1st not getting enough sample and the 2nd resulting in a diagnosis of Thy3f. However after a few days she received a phone call from a different hospital that she had the FNA done to say they had downgraded her to a thy2. She has just received a letter this morning from her consultant confirming the downgrade but after phoning to see why and how the change we are no closer to any clearer answers. She has to wait another 12 months now for another scan. Pls, any advise is welcome as we don't know what to think or do and are getting nowhere with anyone.

  • Hello Mick170473,

Welcome to our forum. It does sound like a confusing time for you and I can understand why you would like to have an explanation. Perhaps you could try again to speak to the consultant and explain that it would reassure you to get some more information as to why her diagnosis was downgraded to Thy2. I thought I would also mention this recent thread by [@sophiew]‍ who had a Thy3f diagnosis recently and who may be a good person for you to chat to having also been in a confusion situation recently with regards to her diagnosis.

It might be helpful for you to talk things through with one of our nurses who may be able to give you some advice about discussing your concerns with your daughter's consultant if you're still unsure about things. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you have some clarification and clear answers soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Mick, I am sorry to hear about worrying times you have with your daughter.

I had thy2 results 6 months ago. It was a relief as it means it is a benign lesion, when thy3 is indeterminate and they cannot say if its cancer or not.

To diagnose thy3 they need to cut half a thyroid out and send it for tests.

They probably had a team of doctors looking at her scans and results and they found that the features of her lesion are more non cancerous than suspicious and it is unnecessary risk to put her through operation.

Bening lumps can stay so for years, I've been told. They will do another test on her later to see if any changes, and hopefully she will stay on thy2.

If she notices changes before the next check, you can always request another FNA.

    Best wishes, Maryna
