After two previous doctors told me that a mole was not anything to worry about, a consultant today took one look and said it was cancer. I am having it removed Monday. So worried as I have had this for a year.

Sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with a malignant mole. At least you're having it taken out. It's better out than in, and they will carefully check the excised mole to see what's going on. Good luck for Monday!
Hi Shirley,
So sorry to hear you are in this position - I'm afraid it happens more often with GP's than it should. It's good though that you are now having it removed. The dermatologist may think it's cancer but it's not a 100% diagnosis - some have been known to make a mistake! In fact I'm surprised the dermatologist said this because they are supposed to 'sit on the fence' until biopsy results come back because a biopsy is the only foolproof way to diagnose cancer. My dermatologist (the last 24 years) is very good at spotting melanoma but I know others who have been wrong. Hopefully the biopsy will bring clear results.
I know you will be worried that the delay in diagnosis may mean a worse result. Although it's possible, it's not always the case. Some melanomas are very slow growing - I left mine a year as I didn't want to bother my GP. When removed it was still only shallow in depth so had hardly grown in that time - hopefully yours will be the same. That was 24 years ago & although the melanoma returned a few years ago I'm still fit, healthy and with no sign of the disease (remission).
What I do suggest/advise is that, if your results come back positive for melanoma, that you make an appointment to see the practice manager and voice your concerns at the two GP's that didn't refer you. Hopefully it will ensure that they review their referral practice in these situations.
Take care & good luck. Please let us know how you get on
Hi
Thank you. I am so worried that it may be nodular melanoma as it’s been a year. I too was surprised that the Consultant said that. Praying for a miracle.
