Thy3f cancer diagnosis

Hi. This is my first time posting here. I really hope someone can help.

After a diagnosis of ME/CFS, I was given more tests and some nodules were found on my thyroid. I had a FNA and my results paper categorises them as Thy3f.

A few days ago I was told it was cancer and to wait for surgery but everything I look at online suggests Thy3f is indeterminate (which means they can't be sure) so I don't understand why I've been told I have cancer?

Does anyone know if this is correct? Can you be given a diagnosis of cancer from an indeterminate result?

Thank you so much

  • Hello ladies

Another thy3 here... But without f or any other letters in the end, whatever that means...

My operation is on Monday and I am freaking out.

FNA was on 15th of June so I waited less than a month, like the doctor said.

I hope you get your dates very soon. Waiting is the worst. Fingers crossed for you all

    Maryna

  • Hi Maryna,

Oh bless you. I really hope it goes okay on Monday. Please let us know how you get on.

I still have 2 weeks to go till my appt with the surgeon and have no sign of a surgery date. Is yours on the NHS or did you go private? The waiting is killing me. My FNA was on the 10/6.

Have you been told what they're planning to do on Monday?

    Sending lots of love.

    Sophie

  • Hi Sophie,

Mine is on NHS, I didn't have meeting with surgeon, spoke only once on the phone when he called to tell me FNA results and that I need to have operation.

Next phone call was pre operative assessment 2 weeks later, done by a nurse.

They said they will cut half of thyroid out and send it for tests to see what it is.

May be the fact how soon they schedule you, depends on where you live? It's busier in larger cities. I am down in Cornwall.

I am sorry to hear they were not very professional with you, saying you have cancer when there is no proof as such.

One thing for sure, if they were sure it is cancer, you would be operated on already. They don't drag with things like that usually.

I hope you get your date shortly. They will give you at least 2 weeks notice, as you need to isolate and then take test for covid before the operation

    Hugs, Maryna

  • Wow what a different experience! I'm so glad you've been seen quickly. Have they said how long you'll need to wait for the results? I really hope it goes okay on Monday and you're not waiting long for them. Crossing everything for you.

I think my hospital are trying to work to those timescales but the thyroid and breast clinic are together. Breast cancer is a lot more urgent so they're prioritising that apparently but I'm on a cancellation list.
It's a horrible feeling having it hanging over you. I think about it constantly.

  • Oh you poor soul! I know how hard it is not to think the worst. I 've studied all sorts on the subject now and watched a bunch of thyroid removal operations on YouTube. One more - and I can do one myself haha

Statistically a bit less than 30% of thy3s are cancerous, the rest are bening, so we' ve got to have hope yet!

In our hospital the breast unit is separate luckily, and they are very busy. Otherwise I would be waiting for ages too.

They said, it will be 2-3 weeks for the results and I can imagine, if they find something dodgy, another 3 weeks for another operation to have the rest of thyroid removed. I really do not want that part :(

But, let's say if I was given a choice, to have thyroid or breast cancer, I would prefer thyroid (after none at all of cause).

    Hugs, Maryna

  • I've been reading up on my FNA and ultrasound results and they don't sound good but I'm trying to stay positive. We have lots to be grateful for.

I can't believe you have to wait 2-3 weeks for the results! I thought it would be days

I'm sure this is the last thing you need right now. I hope you manage to relax today. It'll be over before you know it. Wishing you a speedy recovery x

  • Thank you:)

Did they give you full report on your fna?

All I got is a letter saying its thy3 which means undeterminate, some changes in cells bla bla need operation and that's it.

    Waiting times are the worst.

Last November when I had first fna   I waited 4 weeks for results. It was thy2 then. I started to chase them it was that long. I hope I don't  have to chase this time.

Let me know how you get on.

    Get better soon xx

  • I only have my report because I've been requesting copies of everything and thank goodness I have been - I would still be walking around thinking I had cancer if I hadn't! I even received a letter two days ago confirming in writing that I had cancer! It's unbelievable!

I had an ultrasound on my thyroid 2 years ago and the nodules were U2's then. Apparently they should have been monitoring them but they didn't do that either. It's sheer luck that it was picked up this time as I had to have my tests done again due to them not being able to access my records. I'm really losing faith in them. Having copies of everything helps me feel in control and that I'm not missing anything.

I wonder if you have a letter after your thy3 on the report. I think my f means follicular which is the type of cancer they suspect.

Please let me know how you get on too x

  • That is unbelievable! Why did they make you wait for two years before next check up!  I was thy2 6 months ago and  it seems to change and grow  rapidly. It has grown 7mm since and I have enlarged lymphnode on that side now,  and it all hurts and I feel pressure etc. They seriously screwed up with yours!

But there are plenty of different benign tumors within follicular range, much more of them than malignant ones, so do not despair.

I do not have any letters in the end of mine ( as far as I know, unless they didn't tell me). I wish I had, at least I would approximately know what I could be facing. Very vague thy3 makes me think possibility of medullary cancer- it tends to give painful nodules from what I understood, and I have, plus quite a fast development with lymphnode in the last two months. It is quite rare and harder to treat than papillary or follicular... I know I shouldn't be thinking that..lol

Anyway, whatever it is now, it will be out tomorrow hopefully. I have fear of it being postponed. They changed my admission times twice so far, from afternoon to morning and back to afternoon again.

I will write an update once done.

    Best of wishes, Maryna xx

  • Hi Sophie,

    Just an update.

    The operation is done now.

I had a meeting with the surgeon before and asked him a few questions. I did have a letter after my Thy3 which is A, for 'abnormal'. He said when 'f', the biopsy cannot distinguish between follicular adenoma or carcinoma. Hopefully it is the former one in your case.

It all went OK, there was no damage to the nerve thankfully and I can talk.

It was a bit scary when they started to connect all machines before operation, there was no pre-operating room, but straight in the theatre. When anesthetic went in, my arm became cold and numb and that's all I remember.

Next I was awake with blood pressure machine going and the surgeon was telling me all went fine. He said it will be 3 weeks for the results, but the nurses said could be 10 days-2 weeks, depending which lab they will send etc, they also have a team meeting prior to giving results.

They said the scar is neat, but it looks huge and scary to me. And they did not put dressing on it, may be its common practice, I don't know. I need to put antibiotic cream on it. I thought it will be tiny one on the side, like my neighbour has, but it's about 5-6cm in the middle at the base of the neck. With a bit of swelling and bruising, it's a bit of Frankeinstein sight, but hopefully will be better when healed.

I hope your meeting goes well and you have your date very soon. Please keep me updated

    Best wishes, Maryna x

  • Oh Maryna,

I'm so pleased it went well for you. How are you feeling today? Is it very uncomfortable? I hope it's not too hard to eat and drink. Will they keep you in for long? Sorry for all the questions

I've been looking at the scars that are left and they heal so well! They're almost invisible after a year. I hear neck scarves and polo necks are all the rage this year anyway

Rest lots and let everyone look after you.

Wishing you the speediest recovery x

  • Thank you very much:)

It is tolerable.  Throat ache and stiff neck mostly, but can eat and drink. The lump which looked like a double throat is gone now and earache seem to have gone with it. Fingers crossed.

Just need to get my blood pressure up a bit, i didn't react nicely to opiums. I would make a lousy druggie lol

  • Oh you poor thing. Did they take much of the thyroid away or was it just nodules? I have a U3 on my right side which needs to go but I wasn't sure if they'd take the U2 on my left too. I'm sure I'll find out when I see them next.

I hope you continue to feel better. I have low blood pressure constantly! It's caused some embarrassing faints in my time. I'd also be a useless druggie

  • They took half a thyroid, which actually gave me neck definition lol I have a shape of a throat now, inspite  of Frankenstein scar haha

If they take your u2 too  you would have to go on medication, so hopefully not... but probably depends on what they find in u3 side. Or may be that's what they want to talk to you about on consultation?

I read more into this thy3a and thy3f business. Thy3a is atypical changes in cells, when thy3f is more precise  abnormality in follicular cells. From what I understood, a comes before f.

I started to notice changes in April, so hopefully whatever it is hasn't had enough time to turn into cancer. I feel strangely calm and not bothered.

There is still quite good chance that a's and f's are not cancers, so you've got to think positive. Thoughts have tendency to materialise.

Please write once you have an update.

    Fingers crossed for you.

    Xx
