How quickly should you be treated?

Hi everyone, I received my diagnosis for stage 2a ER and HER2 positive breast cancer a few days ago on the 16th June.

I was told things would get started in terms of further scans and reviews next week - I just received a letter today saying my CT scan is scheduled for 30th June.

I understand hospitals must be extremely busy at the minute but I'm so worried and just want to start treatment asap or even know my proper treatment plan - I was told chemo to shrink the lump then surgery then radio but without the CT scan I wont know how bad it actually is I guess. I really hope it hasn't spread. Based on my scan date I assume things won't progress until after the CT scan and I'm really scared things will get worse the longer they are left

How much time can affect the cancer growth?

I already waited about a month or 2 before I got the lump checked and some time was taken to get a proper diagnosis so I'm desperate to speed things up if possible.

I also have a heart condition and I'm 23. Not sure If any of those factors can possibly help to speed things up

  • Hi

So sorry to hear of your diagnosis.  I was diagnosed sane as you, ER+Her2+ grade 3 idc last August. With all the tests that are required, i.e. CT scans, mri's etc I would say it was approximately 6weeks from first appointment to starting chemotherapy. I then had 6 sessions followed by a mastectomy in February.

When you're first diagnosed it seems like you're on a rollercoaster with all the appointments but it dies gradually settle down.

I felt as though I had months if treatment in front of me which would drag, but to be honest it has all gone very quickly.

Wishing you all the best with your treatment,. If you have any other questions I'll do my best to answer with my experience.

  • Thanks for your reply Lulu. It helps to know that's how long it took for you - I think with a new diagnosis you feel as though everything is going so slowly and as you say it's such a rollercoaster.

  • Hi I was waiting 2 months before start treatment and that was last year before covid.Sometimes its good to call them and pesting them. There is no excuse that they are busy.I was suffering whilst waiting i couldn't even properly breath or walk.

So dont just wait if you feel so call them and keep chasing them.

  • Thanks for your reply Denise - abit of a stupid question but who did you call to chase this up? Was it just the hospital admin or a nurse etc? I dont have the doctors contact details and I haven't been referred to an oncologist just yet only a breast surgeon who originally diagnosed me

  • Hello try to call the oncology dept.I have also an email on the top of the NHS letter or  call even the breast surgeon or the hospital admin. In my case i think they crossed the time limit for beginning for the treatment I had to threat them with the legal action.I am stage 4 cancer. Its disquisting how long they keep the people waiting.

    Good luck
