New to Letrozole

Hi there - my first forum post. I was diagnosed with breast cancer over a month ago and subsequently decided to delay surgery until I can have the mastectomy and reconstruction done together. You probably know that Covid 19 has stopped all reconstructive surgery. So I started taking Letrozole just over 2 weeks ago and apart from an occasional nausea and fatigue I'm okay.

Can anyone tell me if it took some time for side effects to show for them? And if anyone has experienced their tumour shrinking in response to the drug?

This is my second time around with breast cancer. First time was 32 years ago, when I was 30, and I had a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and took Tamoxifen for a couple of years. The cancer's returned in the same breast so mastectomy is the only option now. And reconstruction has to be done from my tummy tissue, not with an implant, because of scar tissue.

And that is all more than I planned to write!! But hello to everyone. Stay safe.

  • Hi again - my surgeries were a little complex as I had mastectomy and reconstruction (DIEP flap, using tummy tissue, creation of new belly button), reduction of the other breast, and some vascular surgery to enable the flap used for the new breast to drain properly. And then my Dad died, and then my Mam died 3 months later - both during the 3rd lockdowns - so I am sure that my recovery was slowed because of grief. BUT ... despite the physical and emotional healing taking time, 6 to 8 months post surgery the landscape is so much better for me now. And that's really important to remember. Our bodies are all different. We might need different amounts of time,... but we get there. We really do.  Believe that.  x

  • Thank you for your support, I am so sorry to hear of your mom and passing. I to lost my dad, my symptoms started 4 days after he passed and my first clinic appointment was a day before my dad's funeral. I feel I cannot grieve at the moment. Being strong for my dad, and my family.  That's why I do need to move forward with my surgery now, sending hugs.  Only one more day until mri. Will the scan show my lymph nodes pls xx

  • Oh I'm niot sure. Ask someone though. It's always good to ask questions and get information. Thinking of you - it's a tough time, I know. And grief does change - it might not go away, but it gets easier to carry. x

  • Hi my mri showed no further abnormalities, no difference in size, so I can have the surgery, a theraputic mammoplasty, surgery in a couple of weeks. So building on that positivity at the moment xx

  • That's brilliant - I am so pleased for you. My friend had the same and had a fantastic result.  And what a fabulous bright shiny day to move forward with good news. xx

  • Aww thank you.  Got my pre op nurse assessment Monday. So things are moving  Been fine on letrozole, been on them a month now xx

  • I've been taken them for 13 months and the results of my bone scan, whch I had a couple of months ago, didn't show any bone density loss that isn't have been normal for a woman my age. So all looking good. xx

  • Hi, surgery just a week away for me now, theraputic mammoplasty, staying positive that my mri did not show anymore abnormalities.  I have been okay on letrozole, few aches and pains, but I think the advantages of it out weigh afew aches and pains. How are you xxx

  • Hello Shazlarr, I was prescribed letrozole pre op due to having previous surgery so they had to wait sufficient time to operate safely. I had Her2+ breast cancer and had a lumpectomie after my  6 cycles of chemo but during this time they stopped the letrozole. Biopsy came back showing residual cancer cells so had a 2 smaller lumpectomie, it came back clear but I will need to continue on the letrozole for 5 years. I am also having 12 cycles of target chemotherapy which I am happy to say has minimal side effects. Just wanted to say if you struggle with one brand of letrozole it's worth asking to change brands. Pre op the letrozole was fine, post op it made me feel poorly so after 4 days I asked my GP to change to a brand called Accord (after I did some research) and it's so much better than the Manx brand I was on previously. I wish you all the best on your journey.
    Take care AJ x

  • Hi thank you. My surgery is on 3rd August, I am having a theraputic mammoplasty with reduction on other breast at the same time.  Been okay on letrozole, just afew aches and pains.  I will have a read on other brands.  Hope your treatment is going well. Take care, xx
