New to Letrozole

Hi there - my first forum post. I was diagnosed with breast cancer over a month ago and subsequently decided to delay surgery until I can have the mastectomy and reconstruction done together. You probably know that Covid 19 has stopped all reconstructive surgery. So I started taking Letrozole just over 2 weeks ago and apart from an occasional nausea and fatigue I'm okay.

Can anyone tell me if it took some time for side effects to show for them? And if anyone has experienced their tumour shrinking in response to the drug?

This is my second time around with breast cancer. First time was 32 years ago, when I was 30, and I had a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and took Tamoxifen for a couple of years. The cancer's returned in the same breast so mastectomy is the only option now. And reconstruction has to be done from my tummy tissue, not with an implant, because of scar tissue.

And that is all more than I planned to write!! But hello to everyone. Stay safe.

  • Hi thank you, hoping my surgery can be towards end of July. What was your size tumour and diagnosis pls, did you have an mri, and was your sizing much different. I cannot feel mine.  Bern on letrozole for afew days and okay with them xx

  • It was 11mm x 10mm originally. Hormone receptive, Grade 2 invasive. The MRI didn't show any problems elsewhere. I could feel mine - that's how I noticed it and then had it checked by ultrsound.

I had a similar one 30 years ago and then had a lumpectomy/breast conserving surgery. But the second time around that obviously wasn't possible.

Be kind to yourself. Talk to people, if you can. xx

  • Thank you, yh I have good support, still having meltdowns, but working my way through them. What biopsy did you have, I had a vacuum biopsy, was fine with that. Did you have your lymph nodes scanned.  Mine have been scanned on ultrasound and I believe they can see them on MRI which I am having next week.  Been fine on letrozole, just abit more tired than usual but just make sure I am in bed at reasonable time to rest. Thank you for your support, I am hopefully having theraputic mammoplasty because I do have an area of dcis that is away from my other area, thats small also xx

  • How did you deal with the waiting, any advice, I have my mri next week, was you not worried about spread while you was waiting xx

  • I did have the lymph nodes scanned and a small biopsy and they were clear. They took out sentinel nodes during thr mastectomy to double check and they were clear.

I wasn't worried while I waited. I'm quite a pragmatic person, and remember, I'd gone through this 30 years earlier. I think the people around me were more worried than me! The thing that did play on my mind until I made the decision was whether to wait and take Letrozole or go for the immediate mastectomy. But I couldn't get my head and heart around having one large breast and nothing on the other side. I know some women just want the cancer out ... immediately. But I wanted to do what was best for my emotional health too.

I wasn't worried about spread - it was Grade 2 and the Letrozole has such a good reputation for managing the cancer.

It is a lot to deal with - and I am thinking of you and wishing you strength and courage. You can do this.

(Sorry for delay in replying - was travelling for a day!)

  • Thank you, you have been a wonderful mode of support. My lymph nodes were scanned, just over four weeks ago and was fine, started my letrozole now, and they will be kicking in. I know they will see my lymph nodes on my mri next week so they can have a look at them then, and been advised they will take sentinel nodes out during surgery.  I already have an telephone appointment arranged to discuss results of mri so things are moving. What did your consultant advise you about letrozole, did he discuss any pros or cons with waiting xxx

  • The consultant surgeon told me about the general side effects which as a list sound horrendous! But I can read the possible side effects of nearly every medication and be horrified.

I did have a few hot flashes over a few recent months ... but nothing significant. And sometimes I feel achey ... but I run, and I'm 63, so aches go with that.

    Best, Lynne

  • Thankyou, my appointment for my mri neatly here.  I have been okay on my hormone meds so far. Can I ask the advice your consultant gave you, in view of you waiting for surgery please. Many thanks x

  • She didn't advise me one way ot the other. It was up to me whether to have the immediate mastectomy or wait and have the reconstruction done at the same time. She didn't see a risk in waiting though. xx

  • Yh they would have had to advise you if it was a risk I would of thought.  My time waiting is only half the time you waited, so fingers crossed I will be in surgery soon. This week mri and next week results, hopefully surgery soon after that. Hormone meds been fine, been on them a couple of weeks now. How did your surgery go xx
