Breast tumour

Hi i had a mammogram and ultra sound today they did a core biopsys and put a clip in  before  I left the doctor took me into a side room and told me I had a tumour and when I go back next time to not go alone I'm now confused as would she say this with out the biopsy results she also said there's a lot they can do now with treatments does this mean I gave cancer I know how silly it's sounds as she said I have a tumour but my family are saying are you sure she said that as usually you would need to wait for biopsy results x

  • Hi Adella

Welcome to the forum and sorry you find yourself here. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in Feb 2018, they had a fair idea of what they were seeing on the scans and told me what they thought it was, however, your family are right as the specialists won't know for sure until the biopsy results come in.

The doctor is right though in terms of trearment, I had to have bilateral surgery plus radiotherpy and hormone treatrment for the next 5 years. I came through it all, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, the surgery was easy and painless as was the radiotherapy. Its very doable.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you get good results when the biopsies come through x

  • Thanks for your reply maybe I shouldn't of told my family until I got the biopsy I hope I haven't told them and upset them if the doctor may be wrong I mean it would be good if she was I hope you know what I mean surely she wouldn't of said I had a breast tumour if she wasn't sure x how amazing to come through that hope your keeping well xx

  • Of course you should have told your family, this period can be very stressful and scary and you will need support. Its difficult for anyone to tell you what the doctor was thinking when she had that chat with you. I know, having gone through this for two years now, that the clinians will drip feed information in order to prepare you for any outcomes. The doctor must have seen something irregular on the scans hence why you had to have biopsies, whether what they saw was so irregular that they thought they'd better prepare you for worse case scenario or whether the doctor's method is just to prepare everyone of the possiblity of cancer but hey, who knows? I certainly don't.

I am well, thank you and I'm not unusual, all the breast cancer ladies on here have came through it also and if yours turns out to be cancer - so will you!

  • Thank you you've made me feel better

  • Glad to be of some help - please stay in touch and let us know how you get on x

  • HI, having gone through this recently with a family member i can tell you that putting the clip in is so that they can find the tumor again later and that they can see how much its shrinking should you need to have chemotherapy before surgery....of course its not possible to know for sure utill they get biopsy results back, but these drs are experiences and usually know what they are looking at, we were told straight away that this was almost certainly a pre-cancerous breast  tumor----in other words, breast cancer, as it of course turned out to be ( not pre-cancerous )...i think he said pre cancerous to not send two very scared  women into hysteria at the time!......of course its possible that what you have is benign or dcis which is very early stage bc and highly (succesfully) treatable so try not to worry too much, even if its not i can tell you that everything is do-able and you will be able to cope, the waiting and first weeks are the worst but after that it gets much easier to deal with....stay positive and hope for the best and keep in touch and let us know how youre doing....much love and hugs xxx

  • Thankyou for your reply  xx I will wait to hear from hospital
