Bilateral mastectomy DCIS waiting for reconstruction nurses.

Covid-19 ,ockdown diagnosis 6.8cm of DCIS in left breast. I'm a so it's most of it!  I'm waiting to have surgery until lockdown eases. The consultant is happy for me to wait but not too long. it's seems drastic to go in and have a mastectomy without reconstruction just because the NHS is not offering reconstruction atm.
My question is. Will I have both breasts reconstructed or just one. They'll be really lopsided if they go for the smallest implant? Did anyone else have reconstruction in the 'other' breast?

.....also is anyone else taking the wait and see option because of covid 19?

  • Hi,

I Had mastectomy last Thursday...no reconstruction offered due to covid but the put an expander in place to prepare for reconstruction.

Now my surgeon has saved my own skin and I have a 4 inch scar and no nipple but with the expander in place and the surgical bra it is exactly the same as before minus the nipple.

When I get the implant they will lift the left hand side to match the breasts up.

I had dcis and after numerous scans and biopsies they found other bits in the lower breast that not sure what was what..I would have lost most of the breast with a lumpectomy.

  • Thanks for responding, it's slightly terrifying. If I wait there is a chance they will save my nipple... a chance I'm taking it's been 6 weeks since my diagnosis and the reconstruction team don't seem to have a date to come back?
it's good to know they offer to 'balance' them out, it would be really silly to have the reconstruction if they're going to be lopsided anyway.  Worth waiting I think?

  • Hi Angela,

I was told that there is a long list for reconstruction up to a year...but to me not knowing what these bits and pieces was and the fact I would lose most of my of the breast I couldnt take the chance.

If you are happy to wait and you get it all done and they save your nipple in one go then that's great x

I was terrified of the op but it turns out it wasnt as bad as I thought (i have only took a few paracetamol since last thursday) and the build up and worrying was worse.

Just this bloody surgical bra and sleeping on my back to contend with now...driving me nuts x

I hope you make the right decision for you x

Let me know how you get on and if you have any questions x
