Feeling numb after diagnosis

Following a large tumour being removed from my partners colon on May 1st, he had a diagnosis last Thursday. He was told that the oncologist would call to discuss results next Thursday , however he received a call before that from a cancer care nurse regarding his wound from the op. She then proceeded to tell him that his tumour had been staged as a t4 n2 locally advanced . She could not explain really anything about it just that the oncologist would explain next week and tell him about survival rates and treatment.

we went straight on to the internet and are now seeing that he had only about 10% chance of surviving 5 years. We are in total shock. A diagnosis straight out of the blue and our minds in complete mush. A week seems a long time to wait to speak to the oncologist and the constant surging the net for answers

Thank you

  • Hi Lisa,

Sorry to hear your dog was poorly. Hope better soon!

Sounds good that you are being really healthy and having a quiet weekend.

There are a lot of people out and about now so I'm staying in. Have had a lot of exercise this week.

Hopefully we'll all have a lovely relaxing weekend!

    Hugsx

  • Hi Lisa. X

Really glad you're getting organised "for once" hehe. Some where i found cancer feeds on sugary things so if you can keep sugar to a minimum. Might help.

We have a nice tidy (as long as i keep at it) back garden gets sun all day, plenty of plants and a nice lawn (apart from a bit of dry grass where Bella wee's) she's our chihuahua our little girl.

Be lovely to go out table and chairs already out but bad design means bren can't go so i stop in with her. I've got h/rails but thares steps as well which bren can't climb.we manage that's main thing.

So glad your getting sorted, don't forget getting partner doing things as well slim him down a bit get rid of the fat it'll really help plenty of exercise for you both.

    Love.... Billy xxx

  • Hi Billygoatt,

I noticed that you'd mentioned in your post about cancer feeding on sugar. It's quite a complicated topic and I thought you might like to have a look at this information on our website.
Whilst it's important to maintain a healthy diet, and to limit sugary foods, we can't say that cancer feeds on sugary foods. There's more information available on our science blog here

    Best wishes,

  • Hello lisa,

just to say be careful with overdoing the vegetables since some can play havoc with the bowel. The same with what you would consider normally good for you, might not be the case until the treatment is finished and the bowel has settled. l was advised to drink coke, and eat jeely babies,a whole packet at a tiome, presumably to help slow down the bowel .Its more a case of eating ittle and often rather than big meals, and keeping note of what upsets you.Seven years on l can now eat foods that were previously a no-no,but even now there are certain "healthy" foods that trigger a massive backlash.Thankfully sweet things are not one of them, and l do not put weight on and my bloods and heart are textbook, there is a god after all .l am sure you will hear the term "new normal" and this can extend to diet as well as bowel,

Have fun experimenting,l certainly found my expectations were very firmly stood on their head,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thanks for posting this. I found the blog really interesting.

  • Hi Lisa,

Just to say I'm thinking of you and hoping you had a good day yesterday.

I had best night's sleep in a long while, after spending a good half hour working out what my response to any need for surgery might be. Had to work through my worries then I was able to let them go.

I slept for 10 hours in total! Haven't done that for a long while.

Hope your dog is better now and that you and hubby enjoyed some time together sitting in the garden.

    No reply to this needed.

    Lots of hugsxx

  • Hi Billy,

Sending you good wishes for today.

The sugary thing is interesting. I enjoyed reading what Jenn posted.

I have to get my blood sugars checked regularly.

Pity you can't make it out into the back garden given those steps. But it sounds lovely to look out on. My view is somewhat less inspiring. That's the one thing I miss - a view out of the window that isn't a brick wall or other people's cars.

Still I'm good at visualising. So I pretend I'm elsewhere and have a lovely flower garden to look out onto. Also try to get out for regular walks. But I slept in this morning and it's a bit hot to go out now. Maybe this evening.

Take care and hope you and Bren and your little girl chichuhua all have a good Sundayx

  • Hi sunny.

Just got results, not good news cancer count has decided to take a climb up, so more ct and bone scans before they decide on treatment options and extra meds to have as soon as script comes through. Keeping positive.

    Billy xxx

P.s worst thing now as always WAITING could be months before they decide.

I'm definitely going to pinch another goldfish for breakfast tomorrow don't tell Lisa. X
