Mum has ovarian cancer

Hello,

I have joined the forum to hopefully get some first-hand information from women who have been through ovarian cancer and can tell me about their experiences :(

My mum is 63 and after having the blood tests and numerous scans, was yesterday told that the 18cm cyst on her ovaries is most likely cancer and she will need a hysterectomy followed by chemo. Dr thinks it is stage 3 due to her symptoms, which include fluid on her abdomen (think it's called ascites). They couldn't drain the fluid because the cyst is so big so she is in lots of pain.

Next steps are an MRI scan to see if the cancer has spread to her lungs or respiratory system, as she is short of breath, and awaiting date for operation.

Has anyone else been through this at all? Would be so grateful to hear experiences, good and bad, to share with my mum and help her through this difficult time as she is worried sick.

Thanks x

  • Hi

I too am going through investigation for ovarian cancer in the past months have had fluid drained from my stomach and chest as couldn't breathe . 10 litres was removed I have a mass on my ovary . Blood work shows high for ovarian cancer . However I have had three lots of biopsies with ct assistance etc and they couldn't get clear enough reading . My last biopsie was last week done and today I go to get the results . I can't be operated on as first thought as my lungs too weak and I needed a result from biopsy to plan chemo treatment . The fluid inside is very uncomfortable I feel for your mum is there no way it can be drained ? I'm 57 by the way . It's hard and waiting to find out results can drive you crazy but keep smiling .. there is lots of support here xx

  • Hi,

Thanks for replying. Sorry to hear you're going through this too.

All sounds very similar to my mum's situation. Gosh, 10 litres! Unfortunately, because the cyst is so big and in the way, they can't drain the fluid.

So are you not having an op to remove the cyst then? I'm going to ask the nurse why they can't do a biopsy first rather than going straight for the operation. Think maybe it's because they suspect it is cancer.

    Thanks

    Charlotte

  • Hi Charlotte .

today I have been diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer and told it had spread to my stomach . Chemo is to be started ASAP . I couldn't have surgery as after all the pre op tests it showed my lungs were too weak . So I will have to see if chemo can shrink it . I don't know what the future holds it's scary I'm sure your mum feels it too . My partner is my strength as I'm sure you re to your mum x x

  • Hi... sorry to hear about your Mum. I was diagnosed last March and was told that the cancer had spread and they couldn't operate. So I started on chemo. After the second chemo I had a CT scan and was told that the cancer had shrunk and the operation could go ahead. So after 6 chemo sessions I had a hysterectomy and debulking surgery followed by 2 more chemos as a precaution. I'm currently NED ( no evidence of disease) and on a Parp Inhibitor.

    I'm 62 and my cancer was stage 4 I'm also BRCA 2.

So there is hope and there are lots of different treatment options. Wishing you and your Mum all the best x

  • Hi Gaynor,

I have only just seen your reply. I'm sorry to hear that :(

After being told they couldn't drain the fluid, the Royal said it needed to be done before they could operate. So last Thursday she spent the day having more scans and having 7 litres drained - there is still more left.

Next step is scan on Wednesday to look at the cyst in more detail now fluid gone and get results of cancer test of fluid taken...

Fingers crossed the chemo works for you!!

    Thanks x

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

Your story sounds promising! Glad you are okay now and fingers crossed for the future! I will share with my mum.

We should find out next steps this week, whether op/chemo first. Just a waiting game now.
