DCIS and active surveillance

Hi, I'm in my late 40's and I've just been diagnosed with intermediate grade DCIS, it's in two separate areas picked up on mammogram for cysts. I have been told I need a mastectomy and the usual reconstruction options after 6mths or so due to Covid. Or another option offered was active surveillance and have 6 monthly mammograms. I just wondered if anyone else has opted for active surveillance instead of surgery?

  • Hello May567,

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis of intermediate grade DCIS. We have information on our website on Ductal carcinoma in situ which I hope will be useful to you.

It is a difficult decision to have to take and I hope that you will get to talk to some of our ladies here who have been diagnosed with DCIS before and faced a similar dilemma. I've had a little look around the forum for you and found another member whose treatment has also been delayed because of coronavirus and who was also wondering about the watch and wait approach. You can read [@sam.y]'s post at the bottom of this thread and respond to it if you wish. Her DCIS is low grade but it helps to talk to someone else who is going through a similar situation.

Perhaps it would also be beneficial to talk to our nurses about this? You can give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you will hear from others soon who find themselves currently in the same boat. Talking to your medical team about this will also help you weigh all the pros and cons to help you make the best decision so don't hesitate to ask them for guidance on this.

    Best wishes,
