Info about protecting skin post surgery for skin cancer

Hi ,i have skin cancer on my forehead and awaiting surgery, i see the info for after surgery that to wear sunscreen and a hat ect, but does that apply to before ? I have been in the sun with cream on and a hat but am i allowed to go in it or ?

  • Hi Vicky,

Although any further sun exposure before surgery isn't going to affect the skin cancer on your forehead, it's still advised to wear sun screen & a hat so that you don't develop another area of skin cancer on your face at a later date. You are still safe to go out so don't think you need to stay indoors. It will get you into the habit of reaching for the sunscreen & hat every time you go out of the door in the summer. Also make sure you wear sunscreen & appropriate clothing on the rest of your body as that is just as liable to sun damage as your face.

If you don't like wearing a hat (I find it makes my head sweaty) get a UV parasol - I got one from Amazon & it's great. It keeps your upper body in the shade too.

Good luck with your forthcoming surgery & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
