Newly diagnosed metastatic lung cancer - what to expect

Hi,

my 78 year old mum has just been diagnosed with lung cancer that has metastasised to her brain. It was the brain tumour that was found first after being rushed into hospital with a suspected stroke. We have been told by the Nuero team that they will not be removing the brain tumour as to do so could cause worse symptoms than she already has. We are currently waiting for her first appointment to see the oncologist and for an appointment for further tests which I believe to be a nuclear medicine scan. It is bad enough receiving this diagnosis and now we are having to wait longer for appointments due to the current covid 19 situation.

I have no experience of cancer  and am wondering if anyone can advise what we can expect to be told in terms of treatment and prognosis. I am assuming from what I have read that we are not looking at a good prognosis but to hear from others who have been through this will help me prepare myself, mum and dad for what we are most likely going to hear.

the biggest question I am struggling with is whether or not to put my mum through whatever treatment they advise, for me it is about quality of life rather than quantity. I know ultimately it is her decision and I will support whatever decision she makes but I would just to know of other peoples experiences so that I can make a well judged decision for myself before discussing it with mum and dad.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi JBWGC,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read about your mum - this sounds like an incredibly tough situation and of course made more challenging with everything that's going on at the moment, as you say.

Unfortunately no-one here will be able to advise in terms of what treatment and prognosis to expect - it's only your mum's oncologist and medical team who can do this. The best thing is to find out all the information you can via the tests, prior to hearing about the options for potential next steps, at which point an informed decision can be made.

Everyone is different and so it's always best to get the medical advice specific to your mum. Having said that, if anyone here has any similar experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
