Decisions

Hello everyone

I would be very grateful for any advice about a decision I have to make

I had a lumpectomy in February this year received my results by phone last Friday.

The up shot is because of the COVID19 situation. I will not be offered radiotherapy.

I have two options:  Have another lumpectomy & lymph nodes plus tablets I think he said Letrozole

Or have a mastectomy plus lymph nodes which he said would be a cure.

I will be so grateful for any advice from yourselves.

    Hi Edie,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry for the reason that you've had to join us. We are living in very uncertain times and it is unfortunate that you will not be offered radiotherapy, as a result of them.

What you decide to do now should depend on your age,  the type and  grade of breast cancer you have and the size of your lump.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years. The first time I had a lumpectomy, followed by Tamoxifen. A year later I had a bilateral mastectomy followed by Letrozole.

All I can tell you is that I felt much more reassured after I had the double mastectomy that I had done all I could to get rid of the cancer. I had a number of side-effects with both Tamoxifen and Letrozole, but managed to complete my course of Letrozole after 6 years.

It is unfair of your surgeon to leave the choice up to you, as he is in the best to know wich procedure would be the most advantageous to you.  Draw up a list of questions for him. If you don't have another appointment soon, you can always phone your breast care nurse, who should be able to get the answers for you.

Sadly, this is a decision that only you can make and, I sincerely hope that whichever you decide upon, it turns out to be the best one for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
