DCIS and mastectomy

Hi all

ive been diagnosed with DCIS in the left breast and the advise is a mastectomy they tell me the right breast is clear and I will be monitored but I am worried about it developing in the right breast. I don't  want to go through a further mastectomy of the RB later in life. I was wondering if people were in the same situation and how they dealt with this? Am I over worrying? Should I consider a double mastectomy? Monitoring will only identify if there are further problems not deal with them. Really confused.

    Sorry you are dealing with this. It just be really hard to wrap your head around it all. From what I know DCIS is very early breast cancer right? That has an excellent prognosis but I know that doesn't help with the fear of issues later on. My mum had stage 3 in 2008 and it was in 10 lymph nodes too which meant high risk. She only had a lumpectomy and has been monitored ever since. I haven't been in your shoes as far as BC goes so I can only tell my mums story. Sorry I haven't been much help. All the best hun x

    Hi Samigee,

    Welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry for the reason that you've joined. I have had both a lumpectomy and a double mastectomy and am now monitored every year. If this picks up anything it will certainly be dealt with, otherwise there would be no point in monitoring.

    Most surgeons are reluctant to remove a good breast, as there is no indication that having a prophylactic mastectomy prolongs life any longer than having a single mastectomy.

    Have a talk with your surgeon and see if s/he can give you any figures to enable you to make an informed choice. You might find it helpful to write down a list of questions before your nextvisit.
