Colonoscopy with stoma

Hi all

My hubby is had part of his bowel removed and has a bag at the moment which he has been told they will look at reversing in the future.

He is due to have a MRI scan and then chemo, however he has had phonecall and letter about a colonoscopy next Saturday.  He has to take stuff to clear him out.  However, how does this work if he has a stoma/bag??

Why are they doing one and is it something that is done whether you have a bag or not??

  • Hi,

I had a colonoscopy via stoma and oddly there was no pain or discomfort at all. Can't help with the reason for it in your case.

  • Hello,

just make sure you have some spare bags handy and keep a close eye on the bag in place for needing changing, other than that no problems. They are obviously wanting to get a look on progress and yes it would be the same, stoma or not

best wishes for the colonoscopy and hope its all good news,

                                                                                      David

  • thank you. hope you dont mind me asking but how do they do it. is it up the bum?

  • No, they go in through tghe stoma.

I've had colonoscopies up the bum before and always required sedation but going in via the stoma was absolutely pain and disomfort free, didn't even have gas and air.
