CT Scan prior to lumpectomy

Hello,

My mum has recently been diagnosed with second stage breast cancer that hasn't spread to her lymph nodes.

This is the second time she's had breast cancer, the first time was 18 years ago when she had a mastectomy and a reconstruction. While breast cancer is in the same breast, they are unsure if it's returned or simply new cancer.

Anyway... This was two weeks ago, during that meeting one of the consultants and the nurses decided that they wanted a CT scan. They told us it was just as a precaution. She has some troubles with her hip arthritis and are being cautioned rather than doing it because they are concerned.

Then in the meantime, she was called for an appointment with the plastic surgeon who is going to be lead on the surgery due to them only deflating the reconstruction and removing the lump (that's what's planned anyway, she's' happy to have the reconstruction removed if they think that's better when they get in there).

The surgeon told her, we'll probably do the surgery Thursday.

So, we were told to go to pre-op, imaging etc.

Anyway, after hearing nothing my mum rang the nurse of the breast cancer ward who told her that it won't be Thursday as they need to discuss the CT scan results - they do this as a group the surgeons and this is on a Thursday. Her results appt is on Monday, however, with the biopsy consultation they rang on Thursday and moved the appt to the next day so I'm thinking they could do that again.

This has totally thrown her off.

I think she'd mentally prepared for Thursday considering all the tests etc relating to the surgery on that day last week.

Does anyone have any experience of this, any advice or hints and tips on what I can do to take her mind off things?

  • Hello n6cnh

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum has been struggling with things. We know that waiting for test, results and appointments can be really difficult time so when you think you have a plan arranged and the goal posts need to be moved it can understandably cause some upset.

Hopefully once her results have been discussed at the MDT today all the necessary information will be available and the Dr's will be able to focus on moving forward with her treatment.

    Best wishes,
