Recently diagnosed

Hi, I have been diagnosed with stage 1 grade 2 HER2 positive Brest cancer. I’m due to have a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy on the 19th. This was going to be a big year for me celebrating my 60th birthday but it’s going to be a big year for other reasons now. I’ve been told that I will probably be having chemotherapy and radiotherapy and Herceptin.
I’ve had brilliant support from family and friends but would like to hear from anyone who has been on this journey.

  • Hello AngieG,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sure our members with breast cancer can share their expereinces with you and it's nice to hear how supportive your family and friends have been. You are welcome to read more about the treatments you're having and how best to cope with them. Despite your diagnosis, I hope this is a good year for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi in January 2019 I was diagnosed with Triple positive breast cancer I had a mastectomy with reconstruction, this was followed by 18 weeks of chemotherapy (paclitaxel) and I started my herceptin injections.  I also started taking anastrozole.  Like yourself I also had big plans for my 60th birthday but decided to keep it low key and hopefully make up for it this year .  My sentinel node biopsy was negative.  Numerous trips to the hospital will seem never ending but just take one day at a time and accept any help offered there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  My last herceptin injection is this Thursday.  Wishing you the best and hugs.  Any questions just fire away.

  • Hi

I too was diagnosed with idc last September 4 days before my 60tb birthday. Mine is stage 2,grade3 ER+ her2+.

After various tests, MRI,heart scan and CT scan I started my chemo journey at the end of September. Originally I was due to have chemo, lumpectomy, radiotherapy but because a second lump was found it was decided to go for full mastectomy.

I had three sessions of EC and three sessions of TPH. I had my mastectomy two weeks ago and am slowly recovering.  I also have to have herceptin injections every three weeks for 12 months and five years of hormone therapy.

I can't say that the chemo was easy but it is a necessary evil. I had tummy problems with both sorts of chemo but found the nausea with EC was hard for me. Having said that, looking back now the time  so has gone so quickly and am looking forward to returning to work. Some people can work during chemo but because I work in a secondary school there was too much risk of infection.

I really wish you well on your journey and if I can give you one piece of advice it would be listen to your body and rest when you feel you need to.

Feel free to ask me any questions

    Lulu

  • Hi, I was planning to go to northern Italy for my 60th wouldn't have been a good idea what with the corona virus anyway lol! Its just so scary waiting for everything to start. I'll try to take your advice and take on day at a time, I'm sure I'll be asking you plenty of questions as I go along, hope you're doing well and thanks for your support xxx

  • Hi, thanks very much for your reply, I'm fortunate that I haven't had to have chemotherapy before surgery, I just hope they get the margins and the sentinel lobe biopsy is ok.

good to know that you're returning to work after all you've been through, I work in the hospital where I will be having my surgery and treatment so at least I already know some of the team. When I went for the biopsy results I knew it was bad news when I saw the nurse specialist in the room, I know the routine from the gyne cancer clinic that I work in

I will try to take your advice and rest, something I'm not good at but I'm gonna have to learn.

    Thanks Xxx
