First Chemo Session Diarrhoea

I'm on day 7 after my first chemo session. I started with constipation up until 4th night. I took laxative and was pretty normal until these last two days where I've had diarrhea. I've taken Imodium a couple of times, and it calms it a bit. But as soon as I eat anything I get cramps and need to go. It's putting me off eating but I know I have to. Is this normal? How long can I take Imodium? Is diarrhea something I have to live with now until I finish my entire course of chemo sessions? I'm laid up in bed feeling like is this worth it. Sorry for downer but I couldn't cope with feeling like this everyday for next few months :/

  • Hello Kajay8

I just wanted to check how you are since you posted the other day. Have things improved at all? If you've not already spoken to your specialist nurse or someone at the hospital it would certainly be a good idea to get in touch with them for some advice and support.
Do let us know how you are.

    Best wishes,

  • I would phone the oncologist nurses, they are very supportive. I even phoned them in the middle of the night, they are always there for you. Its strange how every person reacts differently to chemo. I had my first one nearly 3 weeks ago, the first 5 days awful nausea and sickness forcing myself to eat a little. Then felt like rubbish for a few days. I thnk I have had a touch of every side effect possible but so far not too serious, the first few days were the worst. Ending up with mouth sores on week 3. Lost all my hair week 3 and now have a wig!

Feeling better this week apart from fatigue and now getting ready to go through it all again on Monday!

What joy, but one nearer the end of these 6 cycles.

    Keep looking forward,

Hope you are feeling better now, everything passes.

  • Hi everyone, it's now day 9 after my first chemo session. I think the diarrhea is easing. It was bad these past two days. I've only eaten bread and a bit of chicken since yesterday, feel weak with hunger. But don't want to trigger it off. I had back pain which specialist nurse said is due to daily injection of filgrastim, paracetamol dulls that. It's just this damn gripiness. I have been taking Imodium but sometimes even half an hour after taking one I still have to go. I'm told it's normal. This morning I went to see GP for something to ease my sore burning tongue, and didn't want to eat before incase I had episode while there. I was starving and weak when I got back. Had a plain chicken sandwich and a strawberry and banana smoothie. This was about an hour and half ago.  I've still got slight gripe ache, but not gone to loo yet. I'm dreaming of a Sunday roast lunch. I'm fact I'm dreaming of alsorts of food. I just want to eat and build my strength up without having to have a stomach ache.
