Lung cancer

My lovely nan has been told today she has stage 4 lung cancer I have no idea how long she has with us she is being so brave

  • Hello GemmaB
I'm so sorry to hear that your Nan has been diagnosed with cancer. I'm sure it's been a very difficult time for you all.

We have many members here who have been living with Stage 4 cancer for quite a while. For your Nan a lot will depend on her general health and what treatment or mangement options the Dr's feel may be available for her.
Whilst it's natural to be concerned about how long your Nan will be with you, try to take each day as it comes and spend the time together doing things that you both enjoy. Take the opportunity to talk with her and make memories together.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses for some support then you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

    Sending best wishes,

  • Gemma,

This is heart breaking news for you. I lost my dad to lung cancer on the 31st December and its turned my world upside down.  My one bit of advice is to talk to people about how you are feeling. Dont bottle things up.    And look after yourself. She needs you as strong as you can be.    Any questions dont hesitate to ask.

  • Hi Gemma, my husband has stage 4 lung cancer and he's 74 now, three years on from diagnosis.  As the nurse says, it depends on her health and outlook but your support and love will help a lot.  Carol

  • Hi Dor06

Thank you for your post, it's nice to hear these stories, it gives people a lift to know there is still life after diagnosis. I'm so pleased to hear your hubby is doing ok after 3 yrs. I have a lung lesion, looks like cancer and I'm having bronsoscopy on the 24th. I'll get the results on 3rd of March.

Take care and thanks for posting.

  • Hi Dor06. I was wondering what symptoms your husband had before being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I'm currently waiting for biopsy to get the results.  I just don't know what the symptoms might be as I have other health problems. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks Margaret,

  • Hi maggierose

hope you don't mind me jumping on your post.  My mum also has a lung lesion (cavity) that has doubled since August, she didn't follow the exploration through in August.  She now has a bronchoscopy on Wednesday as it looks like cancer.  She has lost over 4 stone in a year and has no appetite daily, a bad cough which is getting worse as she's been living with me the past month.  She also has COPD and takes inhalers for this.  The consultant that we saw last week said it's either infection or cancer.  I still have my fingers crossed it is just an infection, but seeing her so frail and under 6 stone in weight it's pointing more towards lung cancer.  It's the waiting to find out that is so distressing for everyone.  If you feel like chatting it would be nice to hear how you get on, I hope things turn out well you you.

  • Hi Nikki.

i have been for my endobronchial test this morning, I was scared but it went ok. Got a bit of sore throat and a bit irritable, needing to clear it. I'll get the results next Tuesday. I have lost a stone and 1/2 since last summer. I got this diagnosis at the beginning of February. I hope it's not cancer for your Mum. It's difficult to deal with, my hubby is having a terrible time, I'm trying to be strong for him but even that is difficult. I will let you know how things turn out when I get the results of the biopsy.  Keep in touch,

    margaret
