Normal smear result but have cancer

So I've always been completely up to date  with my smear tests.
In April one came back abnormal so had a colposcopy which came back clear.

Then in Oct i started having random bleeding, so long story short after 2 gp visits I got another smear and sent to a gynaecologist. Smear came back normal but the gynaecologist said she could see something, took two biopsy's and I found out yesterday that I have stage 1b2 cervical cancer.

I feel so angry and confused. How could my smear results be coming back clear when I have cancer?? Why didn't my previous tests pick up abnormal cells, before it became cancer.

My first gp told me it was just stress or my pill, so glad I pushed for more tests and trusted my instincts that something was wrong! Also glad I have a good gynaecologist!

  • Hey, I'm not in the exact same position as you but similar. I have always kept on top of my smears and like you, received a cervical cancer diagnosis (1a1). I just keep being told how lucky I am that it's been caught quickly - I literally had the hysterectomy 2 days ago - and of course I'm grateful but like you, so angry and confused. Like what's the point of smears if they are so inaccurate? I honestly am struggling to make any sense of this and think I just gave to accept that some things just don't make sense and are just unfair. None of my family can deal with my anger (made worse by the fact I am now couchsurfing as was living in the Falklands before this, am now homeless as had to give up everything to come back for the op)...  I think we probably just need to try and focus on the positive, hard though it is. It has been caught early and the prognosis is really good at this stage. I am hoping some further positive life lessons will be gleaned from this at some point but right now, am scared and pi**ed off!! Sorry I can't be more helpful but I do understand how you feel xx

  • Thanks for your reply. At least I know I'm not the only one in this boat. I still haven't been told anything about treatment I'm meant to be getting.

im trying to be as positive as I can, just getting waves of anger over the whole thing.

  • I'm in the same boat ..  clear test 2016 although noted that cervix bled easily!

Now 1B1 ... radical hysterectomy 2 weeks ago now waiting to start radiotherapy

My cancer nurse mentioned compensation and was going to have my smears reviewed.

Consultant said it was very rare to develop cancer so quickly after clear smear result!

  • I'm considering raising a complaint so an investigation is raised.

I just want to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else.

  • I feel exactly the same ... I don't want anyone else to go through this, I'm still coming to terms with it.

Spoke to a friend who is a solicitor and he spoke to a colleague who does medical negligence claims who feels that I have a strong case for compensation

  • Hi nic so sorry you had to go through all of that, how are you doing now? I would be so angry too.

I was wondering if you would advise that I push for a biopsy. My smear last month came back clear but they seen a cervical ectropion, they have booked me into have it removed in 6 months time

Despite the clear smear I have lost weight, increased bowel movements, periods are early and very painful, slight spotting after sex and sex is unbearably painful and burny (tmi).

Naturally you worry and in the wee hours your mind wonders. Could be nothing sinister but these symptoms are all new to me in the last 5 months or so..

    Hope your doing ok

    Xx

  • Hi L_Adams

sorry for the late reply only just saw you your message. From the symptoms you've said I would definitely push for more tests. It could very well be nothing at all, but I learned my lesson, if I hadn't pushed god knows when they would have found my tumour.

Unfortunatly non of my treatment has worked as my cancer is extremely aggressive and I'm now  on Palative care. I've been told I have months.
Don't let my story scare u tho everyone is different and I've been told my case is rare.

More tests can't hurt, if you're still genuinely worried then don't take no for an answer, be a pest, push for more. At the end of the day you know your body and you know if something isn't right.

    Nic x

  • Hi Nic

I'm so so so sorry to hear that you're in palliative care, my heart goes out to you. Its 5.45am and I'm having a wee cuppa in bed before the kids get up and honestly my chest aches for you.

Thank you so much for getting back to me, me pestering you is the last thing you need. When I get my  blood work done this Monday I'll ask to speak to a doctor.

You'll not he far from my thoughts mrs, sending love xxx

  • Hi There

I have recently been to see doctor as bleeding during sex.  Smear test came back clear (4 weeks ago) and I was told it is probably my age as I will soon be approaching the menopause - I am 45 with no menopausal symptoms

I have been back to see GP for another examination and they advised that they can see yellow discolouration on my cervix which they felt was odd and now referring me for an urgent appointment to rule out cancer.  I should have a hospital appointment next week.  I am worried sick

Other symptoms besides bleeding during sex, is pelvic pain and pain and dull ache in right hip.  I have recently hurt my lower back and have sciatica with pain going down both legs (I'm pretty sure it isn't linked).  I have a good appetite and havent lost any weight.

I am searching the internet all afternoon to put my mind at rest.

  • Hi Yellow Diamond. I'm interested in how you are getting on, as I have had very similar symptoms to yourself. Waiting on ultrasound next week. Been fast tracked by GP based on symptoms (watery blood stained discharge, pelvic aches and pains, pain in right hip, frequent urination). I'm 43, no obvious menopausal symptoms and not loosing / gaining weight.
