Newly diagnosed with melanoma

Good evening

diagnosed today with stage 2 melonoma with ulceration, have been told I need wide excision and a sentinel lymph node biopsy. Bit frightened but glad I went to see private dermatologist.Anyone else been diagnosed with stage 2.

  • Hi,

I'm sorry to hear your biopsy came back positive. It's good that you went private after your GP prevaricated - once you have had the results from your WLE & SLNB I suggest you see your GP and explain what has happened so that they take onboard what a melanoma can present like for future reference.

Stage 2 is a bit like being 'middle of the road' - it's neither early stage or advanced stage. The odds of having no further problems after surgery are still very good but it will depend on the results of the WLE & SLNB. If any stray cancer cells are found in the surrounding tissue they may classify you high risk & may suggest adjuvant drug therapy. If melanoma is found in the node(s) they remove during the SLNB you will be restaged to Stage 3 & given adjuvant drug therapy and possibly be offered a full node clearance. So the results of this surgery decide what happens next.

I will send you a friend request - if you accept it I can then send you some further information that you will find helpful. Good luck with your surgery and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma)
