BC and Biopsy

Hi all x

Yesterday mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was found on a recall from her first routine mammogram, and then the lump appeared. She is grade 3, at least 3cm tumour, and the stage will be confirmed after surgery.

She is due to meet with her surgeon next week.

In the meantime, a pea size lump has appeared in her armpit. Also, her side (below armpit, near breast, more near ribs) has become quite squishy and strange. She often is now complaining of pain in the area, shoulder pain, and neck pain.

The consultant said the armpit lump was probably the result of the biopsy - the squishyness has just come up recently so mum is waiting to discuss it with surgeon.

So. I'm just wondering about other people's experiences. I know everyone is so different, but I think mum would just find it helpful to get as much info (good or bad!) on this very new world to her.

Thank you xxx

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your mum. I was diagnosed with grade 2 bilateral breast cancer in 2018. It is quite a shock when first told but gets easier once there is a treatment plan in place.

At the breast clinic an ultrasound would have checked for spread to the lymph nodes, if found your mum would have been sent for a CT scan. I take it since your mum is meeting the surgeon first rather than an oncologist that they do not think it has spread? Therefore the surgeon will outline what surgical options are opened to your mum. Your mum will be assigned a breast cancer nurse who will support her through her decisions and her treatment.

On the day of the surgery your mum will be injected with radioactive dye which the surgeon will use to see if her lymph nodes 'react' if they do the surgeon will remove them and send to lab for testing (staging cancer). Depending on what the end post operative results are your mum will be offered relevent treatment.

I would imagine your mum will be offered surgery quite soon. Good luck with the surgeon, always useful to go in with a preprepared list of questions as its easy to forget or railroaded. Hope this helps x
