Worried and scared

Hi all

my mum called to see us last night to tell us she has been having tests since the beginning of December. She said she didn't tell us as she didn't want to ruin Xmas and new year

she's gone through all that on her own, now has a small lump in her breast and the cancer has shot off into her lymph nodes/neck area.

she will be starting 4 sets of chemo and then potentially surgery.
She is a hugely independent women who doesn't want this to affect us at all - but it has and will.
mom putting together a pamper pack for her to take to chemo with all sorts in to try to help. Can any of you suggest things that helped you during your treatments?

any info would be much appreciated from you warriors - thank you.

  • Hi SazGilly

Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear about Mum's recent diganosis. We wish her all the best for her upcoming treatment.
I noticed that you'd not had a response from anyone with ideas so I thought I'd share some of things that I've seen mentioned in other posts and I know have been appreciated.

Chemo can be quite dehydrating so having a water bottle Mum can take with her is handy along with some boiled or hard sweets. Also I know members have mentioned that lipbalms or moisturiser has been appreciated.

It's not uncommon for some patients to feel cold during treatment especially if Mum decides she wants to try a cold cap so some nice thick warm socks or gloves, may be a soft scarf, shawl or small blanket that she can take to wrap round her if she gets cold.

One thing I know lots of our members here will say is that it can be very boring whilst having treatment. things like magazines, books, puzzle books or music can be greatly appreciated. If Mum doesn't feel up to reading then maybe you might think about setting her up with an audio book that she can listen to.

I hope that this helps give you some ideas.
    best wishes,

I hope your ok and thank you for your reply. I’m here for you if you need to talk. I know it’s not nice seeing parents or kids or anyone close going through this. I hope her chemo goes well on 17th. How many does she need to have ?   I have another scan Monday and first Oncology appt on Tuesday. I will be starting my Chemo soon too. I am dreading it as no idea what to expect. I have not even started to think about what to pack but your doing the right thing. Hand cream. Moisturiser. Lip balm puzzles. Water. Squash. Blanket or shawl. Thick winter socks. Is she trying the cold cap ? I’m not sure yet. Oh the chemo nurses will give her a wheatbag to put in microwave. Incase they don’t. Ask them. If not buy. They give you non alcoholic mouthwash Ask for few extra bottles. Xx

  • Hi again

thank you so much for the emails - I've sent them both emails this evening.

i don't know how many chemo's mum is having, I'll be seeing her tomorrow to give her her goody bag so will try to ask more then.

shes being sent to the wig clinic too as she's been told she'll lose her hair more or less instantly. I think the wig bit she'll actually quite enjoy as she loves glamming you

Will you let me know how you get on on Monday and Tuesday at your appointments? I'll be thinking of you xx
