    Hi Joe,

    Welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you are still having pain 1 week after your lumpectomy. Has it got sorer today, or has it been sore all along? If it is getting sorer, it may be that there is an infection.

You will have had the tissue that was removed at the time of surgery sent to pathology. This is usually done to ensure that your surgeon got clear margins around your lump. If he has, then there is no need for further surgery. If he hasn't, then he might need to take a little more away, but it wouldn't be as big an operation as the last one.

If you are still having a lot of pain, phone your breast care nurse and see what she advises.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi Joe. Agree with Jolamine - contact your breast care nurse to talk it over, just in case there’s an infection.

I got some very good soft, front-fastening support bras from my cancer centre - which I still wear 5 years later, they are so comfortable! Maybe ask your breast care nurse about them?

Unfortunately I still get a bit of pain even five years on, as does a friend who had the same tumour at the same time, but it’s more annoying than anything, not bad enough to take painkillers. Your surgery sounds very recent so a bit of pain expected. You shouldn’t have to suffer though. Your cancer centre should suggest appropriate pain relief.

I also had to have second surgery but it’s not as big a deal as the first time. It’s quicker, there’s less anaesthetic involved, it will probably just be to make sure there’s a clear margin, as Jolamine suggests.

You can do it. It’s a bummer of a ‘journey’, that’s for sure, but I focused on being rid of the tumour. I even donated mine to research! I like to think of it being in a lab somewhere, helping scientists find new ways of tackling breast cancer.

Good luck and happy to chat.
