Diagnosed DCIS

Hi everyone. I was diagnosed on Thursday with DCIS, and have to have surgery to remove the area in January, then once I've healed a bit I have to have 4 weeks of radiotherapy, 5 days a week. I think I was more shocked at the amount of radiotherapy I'd need, I never expected full weeks of it, maybe a day or 2 a week.

My breast screening centre called it pre cancerous, my leaflet says it's the earliest stage of breast cancer, Im calling it non cancer. I want to know what everyone else feels if they've had it, do you feel it is cancer? I think the hardest bit won't be the surgery, it will be attending the hospital, it might make it seem too scary then.

I'm so grateful for mammograms and this was my first now that I'm 50, so it's been caught at the earliest stage. I'm a lucky lady. Id like to thank the breast screening service in general, and the west of Scotland breast screening centre in Glasgow as they have been the kindest people, and explained everything so clearly at every stage.

Now, it's on with the festivities and over eating of Christmas, then after that the business of getting rid of these little buggers before they progress

  • I was diagnosed with dcis on 2011 had radical mastectomy with reconstruction but no radiotherapy. Your prognosis is eexcellent, i was told the same, afteri had  my surgery my consultant said congratulations, you are healed,

  • Hi Lizlei70, am sorry you had to have a mastectomy, that must have been hard. But so pleased you got the all clear.

Thank you for replying, I hope you have a lovely Christmas xxxxx

  • Hi, I to have been diagnosed with DCIS but 12cm in length so having a total right mastectomy with node biopsy on 9th Jan. No radio needed, I'm also so grateful to breast screening as from first mammogram to diagnosis 22 days I to was called early as only 49.  Prognosis is excellent and so will yours be. Stay positive, laugh, love and we will all kick cancers butt. I to was told it's not a cancer but we r treating it as a cancer, so when people ask i say cancer, then explain. I'm having a mastectomy due to a preventative measure but they say i could of had it for years.and would never of found it, so I'm so glad about mammograms, a few minutes discomfort for a life is well worth it.. enjoy christmas and keep us all updated

  • K381 hi, and thanks for your reply. I wondered why folk got the mastectomy, so it's maybe something to do with the size and where it is? Mine is almost in my armpit and must be quite small because the total area getting taken is 1 inch. I should be operated in mid January, not sure how long my process will take from start to finish with the radiotherapy, but it won't take too long.

Have a wonderful Christmas, and celebrate every second.

    Much love, Lynn xx
