4cm lump: DCIS recurrence

I was diadnosed with dcis 2011, had left mastectomy and reconstruction, everything was fine, i under surveillance for 5 years and was discharged 2016. Fast  forward 2018 i had an ultra sound on my  right breast and it was clear. A month ago I had another ultra sound and it showed i have 14mm lump and was told i have dcis.i  was advised to undergo MRI last week,  got the result on Wednesday, MRI showed its not 14mm lump but its actually 40 mm.

Iam now awaiting for another biopsy to check if it is invasive or not.

For the past 3-4 years i kept on asking if i can have prophylactic mastectomy and was denied, was told I only have 2-5 % chance of recurrence. Unfortunately I belong to the  2% popolutation.

Now, I’m scared to death.

  • Hello Lizlei70,

Thank you for sharing your story. I hope you won't mind but I have slightly edited your title to include the words 'DCIS recurrence' - this will increase the chances of your post being seen by others who have been diagnosed with DCIS.

I am so sorry to hear you belong to the minority of people who have a recurrence of DCIS. I can imagine this is a particularly scary time for you as you are also waiting for biopsy results to check whether it is invasive or not. I hope you won't have to wait too long it must be particularly hard at the moment with the festive period to manage to focus on anything else.

I hope you will hear from some of our lovely members who have been in a similar position before. If you needed to talk things through with our nurses, feel free to ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm (their helpline will be closed on 24th, 25th and 26th December as well as on the 1st January)

Keep us updated if you get a chance: we're thinking of you during this anxious time.

    Best wishes,

  • I am clean, beginning reconstruction, my Right breast mastectomy was 12/12/14.  I am so sorry you have to deal with this again, I am sending payers and thoughts to you

  • So sorry you find yourself needing further treatment. I was diagnosed in December 2017 and after surgery and radiotherapy now consider myself cured.

I'm now on a patient led follow up programme which means that they don't contact me but they're only at the end of the phone if I have the slightest concern.

In addition I have the reassurance of the annual mammograms for 5 years.

BUT......I don't think the worry of reoccurence ever leaves you. It may be buried deep in the back of your mind but doesn't disappear altogether.

I sincerely hope your biopsy results are good. I'm sure you already know that a high percentage of DCIS can be benign and hopefully this is the case for you.

It's a good time of year to be kept busy. I ended up with a split lip over a particularly competitive game of 'spoons' at New Year!!!

My daughter has also been having the whole cocktail of treatments just this year as she was diagnosed in February. Her philosophy has been 'It is what it is, I can't change it so I'll just get on and deal with it'

Not such bad advice and I try to apply this to myself now

I wish you well for a happy and healthy future. Please let us know how you get on

    Love Irene xxxx
