Breast cancer for the third time

My mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer for the third time.  She had it in her left breast 10 years ago, treated by lumpectomy and radiotherapy.  she had a different more aggressive type in her right breast 6 years ago treated by lumpectomy and chemo.  The cancer has recurred in her left breast (diagnosed 10 years to the day).  The oncologist has said “it won’t kill her” but she cannot have radiotherapy again in. The same site.  They are talking about her needing a mastectomy. This is was all discovered after she fell and shattered her shoulder.  They also need to double check her bones. They had said it was osteoporosis but need to reassess following a confirmed diagnosis of cancer in the breast.  Last  night she was saying she had always said if it came back she wouldn’t have any treatment. She was saying she doesn’t want to have a mastectomy.  I’m terrified she is going to refuse treatment

  • Hello Warrior1
I'm sorry to hear that your Mum is dealing with breast cancer for a 3rd time. I'm sure it's a difficult time for you both.

It's important to remember that people react to being given a cancer diagnosis in different ways and for your Mum having faced this before it's perhaps understandable that she's feeling as she is at the moment. It may be that over the coming weeks as the rest of her tests are finished that your Mum feels more comfortable discussing treatment options with her Consultant.

If you feel that it would help you to talk to one of our nurses about your concerns then please do give them a call. I'm sure they'll be able to offer you some support. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
