Just been diagnosed with Rare cancer! Yolk Sac!?

Hi, this is something I would never ever see myself doing, but here I am.
I'm 27 and knew something was wrong for a long time.
they found a 'cyst' on my left ovary around 12 weeks ago, I then had surgery to remove it around 5 weeks ago as it was 10cm.
I then got a phone call from the surgeon yesterday who sat me down and told me it's a rare form of cancer called 'yolk sac' and apparently it's only common in young babies and children. But once removed they seen some polyps outside on the lining of my stomach and they tested them which showed the same 'rare' cancer (so it's trying to spread)
I am in utter shock, as any person would be.
they only took 2 out of the 4 polyps to be tested.
I got my bloods back today an they have said the AFP is in the 1,000's.
im confused? If they took the 10cm tumour out surely the cancer is gone!?
I'm just all over the place, they have referred me and I'm just waiting for a CT.

I have 2 young beautiful daughters and I am extremely positive about all of this, as I know I can beat this but I don't know wether I'm just in denial. I suppose I am just very confused.
Just having people share their experience would make me feel tons better!

  • Hi Sophia,

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I can't offer much help because I don't know anything about your type of cancer but you may want to ring the Macmillan Trust, they have a free phone number and they are very good at giving advice and support, even practical support with everyday things. Do give them a call, they have experienced professionals answering the phone lines.

You may want to ask if there is an hospital specializing in the treatment of that type of cancer in the UK, and if there is one it might be worth asking to be treated there. Sometimes the success of treatment depends very much on where it is done. I don't mean to make you nervous but as you are so young you deserve to be given the very best chance to beat this.

And yes... you will beat this.

    BIG HUG
