Mum with stage 4 bowel cancer, mets to peritoneal cavity

Hi everyone,

I am a worried daughter, looking to hear about people’s experiences.

My mum is 68 and has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer. She was picked up on the bowel screening and had no symptoms, so it came as a massive shock when they found a tumour during the colonoscopy. Initially they thought it was localised to the bowel and possibly the lymph nodes and she was scheduled to have an extended right hemicolectomy. However when they attempted to do that, they saw that it had spread to the peritoneal cavity. As such, they did not proceed with the surgery.

She has started on Folfox and has just had her second infusion. We have just gotten her date for her scans post the first round of chemo in February and I can’t help but worry about the future or finding out the chemo isn’t working.

Thanks for reading.

Wishing you and your loved ones well.

Clara

  • Hi Clara,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read what your mum is going through at the moment - I'm sure this is difficult for you and those around you and I hope you're getting on OK.

My reply here will boost your post so more people will see it, and if anyone has any similar experience then hopefully they'll be along soon. You may wish to search the forum using the button in the blue bar above to find other discussions too.

It's a bit of a cliche but try to take one day at a time and try not to worry too much about what might happen in the future. I know this can be easier said than done.

Wishing you all the best - and look after yourself,

    Ben
