Chemo Advice

Looks like I will be starting chemo in January. Has anyone got any good advice as to how I can prepare my body for this. I do eat fairly healthy anyway currently working towards a plant based diet. I'm still recovering for the sentinel nodes so my arm isn't as flexible as it was. Should I be joining a gym do you think? Also what is good to eat during chemo also.

  • Hello mic-st,

It's a good idea to try and prepare yourself ahead of your chemotherapy treatment which starts in January. I thought I would share with you a couple of resources which might help you get ready for your first day of treatment. We have a useful page on our website on what to expect from chemotherapy which you can read here. It includes a nice little video which shows you what happens on the day. You can also find out more about everyday life during chemotherapy including diet on this page where it mentions that "Cancer Research UK does not recommend any particular special diet while you are having chemotherapy. Each person has different dietary requirements. We recommend asking your doctor to refer you to a dietician for professional advice."

In terms of preparing your body ahead of chemotherapy, the best thing to do is to carry on eating healthily as you are already doing at the moment - we have a section on diet and cancer which will give you some great tips on how to have a healthy diet.

We also have information on the benefits of exercise which may be of interest to you. You can find out more about this here

I hope this has helped a little. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 and you can call them Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be very happy to answer any question you may have on chemotherapy, diet and exercising.

I will now let our members come and share their own chemotherapy experiences with you as I am sure they will have a lot to tell you about how it all went for them and how they best prepared themselves.

Best wishes and best of luck for your treatment,
