Spine tumour

Hi firstly thanks for any response. I had visit yesterday to see surgeon specialist and told if I don’t have tumour removed I will end up paralysed as tumour has imbedded itself near the nerve shaft between L4/L5 . The operation will be before Xmas or just after quite quick to say the least . I’m a 57 yr old female so not a youngen. I will have to be on my back flat for 3 days in hospital for spinal fluid to settle I’m scared stiff I’ve had a kidney removed and beat cervical cancer and 2 major bike accidents but your spine is different. The risks he said can be quite hi . I can’t think straight and don’t know who to discuss it with as my family get to emotional. Please can anyone offer any helpful advice or information thanks again.  Dawn

  • Hello Dawn,

I can completely understand why you are worried at the moment. You have indeed been through a lot having had a kidney removed, beat cervical cancer and two major bike accidents and I can understand why the idea of having an operation on your spine would make you nervous. It sounds though like your surgeon recommends the operation and I hope you have managed to ask questions and talk things through with your specialist. Sometimes it all goes too fast during the appointment and it can be difficult to think of what to say in situations like this. Perhaps you could try and get in touch with your specialist and see if you could ask any questions you may have about the surgery and more details as to what to expect. I hope you will also meet others on this forum who have had this type of procedure before and that they will share their experience with you.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a ring and to talk things through with them. They may have additional information for you on this or may be able to point you in the right direction.

    Best wishes,
