BC diagnosis - presurgery questions?

My mum has just been diagnosed with stage 3 IDC breast cancer and is waiting for her pre-surgery appointment. I know that she won't want to ask any questions while she's there...but there are so many things that need to be considered. I intend to go with her to ensure that we have all the information about what to expect and work with the team to understand the treatment plan etc.

The gut reaction is just to go straight for mastectomy - there are so many questions about the effectiveness of lumpectomy and chemo these days. Both my MIL and GrandMIL had breast cancer and chose different treatment methods - but that was around 9 years ago so treatment has improved so much since then!

Just wondered if anyone could recommend specific questions to ask at the pre-surgery appointment as we don't want to miss anything important.

Thanks in advance...

  • Hey

Sorry to hear about your mum.  I was diagnosed with grade 3 IDC in March, I've since had chemo, a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and I will have radiotherapy in the new year. Some suggested questions would be, % chance of the cancer coming back with a lumpectomy vs a mastectomy. Recovery times, any follow on treatment? How confident are they at getting it all out with the lumpectomy? What happens if they don't get it all out with the lumpectomy? If mastectomy what are the reconstruction options if that's what your mum wants.
hope that helps, let me know how you get on.

  • Thanks wl, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Hope that your radiotherapy treatment goes OK in the new year.
