Mum 89 x - rayed and likely lung cancer

MY  mothers main illness up until 6 weeks ago is Dementia which is bad enough though she is I would say in moderate stage but obviously declining.

Six weeks ago she was admitted into hospital with UTI and as she had flank pain to abdomen they completed a chest x ray and CT scan.

My mum has past history of pneumonia aged 32 and then TB at 63 which targeted her lung and to which my mums hospital consultant aware of prior to tests, but found a new lession. They also report on summary that mum has likely metastasis to liver and and spine

I CAN NOT get answers as to how hospital arrive at this diagnosis considering no other tests carried out and they have now referred her to palliative care with her wishes to stay at home.

MY mum has no shortness of breath issues, no weight loss, no cough, no plural infusions and no pain and no dramatic fatigue other than sleeping at times during day which is systematic with Dementia. There was no concerns with her bloods , and she retains fussy but good appetite.

I would of thought sputum sample would of been taken and whilst understand that mum has declined further investigations due to her age and intrusiveness of further tests I can't help but feel mum is being pidgeon holed .

Mum has been home 6 weeks and doing ok I think even palliative nurses are baffled as they obviously look for signs of decline ie looking for mottling to skin, swelling to ankles bone of which she has . I have emailed the hospital consultant with my concerns some 3 weeks ago but have not had the courtesy of a reply. I know cancer may well be the kinder of the predominant diagnosis of Dementia, but as a social worker I do have my nagging suspicions of NHS for what I have witnessed and seen in my 20 years within the health care setting.

I would appreciate some advise

  • Hello Snowpatrol123,

I am sorry to hear about your poor mum having to go through this at the moment whilst simultaneously having to deal with dementia. It must be so tough for her and those around her.

I can understand why you would want some answers as to why no further tests were carried out. You've done the right thing to email the hospital consultant and it's a shame you didn't get any answers. Perhaps you could also try ringing the consultant's secretary and seeing whether you could discuss this over the phone? I hope you get an explanation soon.

If you wanted to talk this through with our cancer nurses, you are welcome to ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been in a similar situation before and that they will come and share their individual experiences with you.

Best wishes to you and your mum,
