If cancer has spread to lymph nodes how bad is that?

I am seeing lots of contrasting info regarding cancer in the lymph nodes. My Dad has been diagnosed with secondary cancer in his lymph nodes but they don't know where the primary is so he has more scans. Anyone else have experience of this? What treatment/recovery is likely?

  • Hi jhop,

If you type “cup” into the search bar it will bring up information on cancer of unknown primary. None of us would be able to give you information on treatment/recovery relating to your dad as we are not medical professionals...just cancer patients and carers...and every individual is different in terms of their own cancer. Hopefully further scans will give the information needed, and your dad’s medical team would be able to explain things in more detail when they have a fuller picture.

    Hi Jhop,

I agree with Minska. It is impossible to predict how your dad will get on until you have further details. such as how many of his lymph nodes are affected and whether or not any other organs are involved. Further tests will reveal this. Once you have these, his surgeon will be the best person to advise you of his situation.

Hopefully, the tests he is going to have should locate the primary source too. It would be a good idea to write down any questions you have and take this with you to your next appointment. I do this before each appointment now and find it very helpful, as it is all too easy to forget something important in the heat of the consultation.

Please keep in touch and let us know how he gets on. We are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
