My poor Dad diagnosed

My Dad was diagnosed with cancer yesterday. The doctor said he had secondary cancer that has spread to the Lymph Nodes and they don't know where the primary is so he has to have full body scans ASAP. He has a hard ish lump under his right ear which is pretty big. His GP hadn't sent him for tests for 4 months since first finding this as he thought it may be a wisdom tooth infection. The cancer unit doctor was less than impressed fo say the least.

I know all forms of cancer are terrible but is this sort particularly bleak?  I can't loose my Dad he means so much to me and at 62 can't leave anytime soon. :( any advice welcome.

  • Hello jhop85

I'm sorry to hear that Dad was given this news last week. It's particularly difficult at the moment as you know he has cancer but there are still more tests needed and this means there are lots of questions left unanswered.

Hopefully the additional scans/tests that Dad's Consultant has requested will take place soon and provide his team with the information they need to be able to give a fuller diagnosis. Once those have happened I'm sure that they will be in a better position to discuss what treatments might be appropraite for your Dad.

I know that there may be a temptation to Google to try to find answers but it's always best to give it a wide berth. Google will nearly always give a worst case scenario and there is a lot of inaccurate information to be found online.

If you'd like to talk to one of our nurses about things then please do give them a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Keep in touch jhop85 nad let us know how Dad gets on.

    Best wishes,
