Biopsy Results: been told breast lump is cancer

Hi.

I was hoping for good news today as my breast lump is moveable, smooth and not tethered but unfortunately I've been told it's cancer and one of my lymph nodes looked suspicious, it was tested and it has some cancer cells in it, but I think it was only one node. I was wondering if anyone else had a diagnosis like mine, I guess I'm seeking reassurance. The surgeon said he had seen a lot worse and those women have done well. I'm waiting for a MRI and CT Scan and then their plan is 6 sessions of chemotherapy then surgery then radiotherapy and then hormone therapy. How does everyone else cope.xx

  • Hello Beryl.1,

I am sorry to hear about your biopsy results and that one node has been found to be suspicious. I hope you will hear from others here who have had a very similar diagnosis to yours and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you. You seem to have a lovely surgeon who has been reassuring and it's great that you have a treatment plan in place. I hope that you won't have to wait too long for the results of the MRI and CT scans and that you find out very soon exactly what you will be dealing with.

I hope you won't mind but I have slightly edited your title adding the words 'been told breast lump is cancer' - this will hopefully make it easier for other ladies who have had a similar diagnosis to spot your post more easily and share their experience with you.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to answer any question you may have or talk things through with you. It is a lot for you to take in at the moment so don't hesitate to pick up the phone if you need any advice.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. This is the most difficult time, waiting for results and confirmation of the plan ahead, but trust your team they know what they are doing.

My treatment plan was similar to yours, so diagnosed in March the plan at that time (because the lump was so large) btw I couldn't feel a lump just that one boob felt different to the other, goodness knows how something so big was hiding. Anyway the plan was chemo, mastectomy with lymph node removal, radiotherapy, hormone tablets and reconstruction this time next year. What has actually happened is different, ct scan picked up that I had appendicitis , so in May I had that removed so it didn't rupture during chemo. 6 rounds of chemo which I finished early September, a further scan showed my lump reduced to zero- they couldn't find it.
So because of that I had options, lumpectomy, mastectomy with immediate reconstruction via LD flap or Diep flap. I opted for the Diep flap and I am about ten days post operation and doing ok. Once i have healed it will be radio then tablets.
I cope by taking each day as it comes, not thinking about the what ifs, and about the fact that it isn't fair. I cope by spending time with my friends and family, and my children as they live for today. I cope by being kind to myself and not putting too much expectation on myself.  I cope by talking to the breast Care nurse if I do have any worries and she takes them away and sorts them for me. I also stay well away from google, I haven't googled anything in relation to my diagnosis, I trust my care team and the real experiences of people on here.
It's a tough road ahead, and I remember being very scared and had doubts in my ability to get through. But I've discovered that I am a lot braver and stronger than I thought. You can totally do this, get your fighting gloves on and we can do it together.

    sending you a big hug.

  • Hello Beryl1

Welcome  and sorry to hear about your diagnosis but good that you have been given quite a lot of information from the biopsy already.

i am quite early on into my journey but share some similarities as yours so far but i am sure there are others who are further along and maybe able to contribute more.

I am four weeks post lumpectomy for removal of  2 lesions and 1 lymph node that was postive. Prior to the surgery i was told the tumours were grade 1 and lymph nodes were clear. However following surgery the tumours were found to be grade 2 and bigger with 1 postivie lymph node.

However the my team are still telling me that even with 1 postiive node the picture is still positive with a good outcome. So what you team have told you seems to fit along a similar line so you have every reason to trust is a good outcome. I am waiting the results of Oncotype test to see if chemo is indicated for me, and like yourself will then have possible chemo, then radiotherapy and oestrogen blockers.

I was dreading the surgery simply because I had never had an anesthetic before and wasn't too confident of waking up (lol) but am here to tell the tale. I went home on the same day and was up and about from day 1. i was a little sore but with pain relief it was ok. I am now doing good and off all pain relief just waiting for the next stage to begin.

My experience so far is that once things start its a question of dealing with each days events. My team have been very accessable and I have been able to go and see them when I had concerns, hope thats the same for you. Each persons circumstances will be slightly different and your team may tailor your treatment sliglthy different which is something I am just beginning to appreciate.

From reading some of the chats people can have very different experiences of the chemo so sail through others get side effects so sorry I can't add anything on that at this time.  I am expecting results in a few weeks so will be happy to keep updating the chat to share experiences.

I wish you well with you upcoming treatments and hope you can keep logging in to let us know how you are doing

    xx
