Myeloma vdt pain relief?

Hi,

My mum was very recently diagnosed with myeloma. She starts vdt induction treatment tomorrow. She's in a lot of pain right now, she's really not doing well. I believe the treament helps with the pain, I'd like to know if that's true from your experiences and if so, how long before you felt some relief. Also, are there any tips for managing pain. She's on string opioids at the minute and is using a tens machine but to no avail.

I appreciate everyone's illness is unique bit it would be good to hear your experiences

Thanks

  • Hi Maria, I've got myeloma and have had it since 2016. Initially I was very ill and in a fair amount of pain. It's true that treatment can alleviate pain, once it starts to deal with the myeloma load, as can radiotherapy. How soon though, I would think is dependant on the person and the amount of disease present.

By far the most effective for me has been morphine - slow release tablets as well as oramorph - it got control of the pain very quickly, to the point where I was oft times pain free, a very odd experience for me.

I would suggest seeing your mum's GP who should help her to get the exact dosage needed as soon as possible. There should be no need to live in pain.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

    Best Regards
