Mum diagnosed with stage 3 skin cancer. Help

Good evening all, hope you are doing okay? I am new to all this but wanted some advice if possible.

My mum had a black sort of lump on her nose 2 years ago and was referred to a dermatologist who said it was nothing and froze it. A few weeks later she had a follow up appointment and said they needed to do it again as it had not worked the first time. So they repeated it. A few weeks later it started to turn into a dark black patch and seemed to get worse. So she went back to the same dermatologist and he said its fine. My mum noticed another black sort of spot appearing but he was adamant it was a freckle and said nothing else needs to be done. So mum went home and thought he must know what he is talking about. Anyway the black patch and spot did not go and it remained there. However recently it got worse started to bleed. Mum went back to the dr and they had to refer her again but mum said she wanted to see another consultant as she had no faith in the last one. She went to the dermatologist again and this time the gentleman looked closely and said its probably cancer however I cannot be sure unless I do a biopsy. So now she has been informed its stage 3 melanoma and she needs to have it removed and then her nose regrafted. They also confirmed they will check her body out for further lumps etc and also check if spread. However I am confused as I've read that it's stage 3 when its spread to the lymph nodes but they have not confirmed that only that the biopsy showed stage 3. Sorry to rattle on. Just confused and emotional.

Thanks everyone

  • Hi Kate,

You are correct to be confused. Had the mole been removed and biopsied? If so the consultant may be referring to the TNM Stage 3 which means the depth of the mole rather than Stage 3 which involves the lymph nodes. Stage 3 can only be diagnosed if lymph nodes have been removed and biopsied in a Sentinel Node Biopsy or a Complete Node Clearance. If your mum misunderstood the consultant it would be worth her ringing her Specialist Cancer Nurse (if she has been allocated one yet) or her consultant's secretary and ask for clarification. If it is TNM Stage 3 that puts her at Stage 2 at the moment. This would be confirmed after her further surgery (a wide local excision).
