Can I opt for a double mastectomy

Hi

I was diagnosed with breast cancer yesterday in my right breast.  So will be having a mastectomy in a months time.

I would like to ask if anyone knows if its possible to request a double mastectomy to reduce my chances of it reoccurring.

Thanks

Lynette

    Hi Pinkpony,

My, you've been through a lot in such a short time frame.

I believe that my recurrence problems were due to my first surgeon not getting clear margins ater my lumpectomy. My surgeon at the time, assured me that he had been aware of that at the time and removed another sliver of tissue to ensure that all was ok. I believed that until I noticed a second lump in the same part of the same breast a year later. This was of the same type and grade as my original cancer was. There was no lymph node involvment either time.

I get your point about your bras. I got totally fed up with white, nude or black 'busten halters'. Like you I laid all of my  pre cancer bras aside, but I have gradually resurrected them by inserting pockets to hold my prosthesis. You may be 54 and not ready for post-surgery bras and baggy tops yets - I am 71 and am certainly not ready for these yet and, never will be. There are also a few companies on line that provide decent looking underwear, but at a price. However, they do have good sales and, I like to take advantage of these.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Lynette,

I hope you are feeling better.  I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer and would also like a double mastectomy, I have my surgical consultation later this week.

Did you succeed in getting your wish of a double mastectomy, if so, how?

    many thanks

    Chris
