My mother is 77 years old and will be undergoing a mastectomy next week (removal of both breasts, left side lymph node clearance and sampling of the right side lymph). She is stage 3 in her left breast and stage 0/1 in her right breast. The surgeon has told us that she may not need chemotherapy. I thought chemo was advised for anyone with cancer spread to the lymph nodes. Is this something that is not the case for older patients?
