Hodgkins lymphoma

Hi all,

I just thought I would post a bit about my recent diagnosis of the type of cancer called Hodgkins Lymphoma, which I found out I had just Friday afternoon. A couple of months ago I noticed a swelling in the left side of my neck which looked noticeably different to my right side, which I shrugged off as I thought it may have been a work related strain. Not long after, I notcied a few smaller, almost grape sized lumps higher up, one on my throat, and another around the jaw bone. Thinking that didn't look right, I went to the GP, and he told me it was swollen lymph glands, and put it down to either an infection or cancer.

I've had 6weeks of not knowing the cause, but now that I finally know what is going on, I can get the ball rolling on getting the treatment I need to get myself better.

  • Thanks for the reply, sounds like we have similar stories, have you had your pet scan now and do you know more? I've got my follow up apt on Monday at 11am so hopefully will know what type then and have some kind of plan! Tc and hope you have a treatment plan soon too x

  • Hiya,

Symptoms wise, I think we are in similar positions, however I have recently had my PET scan and the results came back kinda worse, in a way, than I thought, in the fact that my Hodgkins is at stage 4. Which, like I said sound worse because of the stages, but it just means that the disease is both above and below the diaphragm with more glands affected, and a highlighted area around the bone marrow, which I have been told I may have to have a bone marrow sample taken. Still treatable, with the same chemo treatment.

I have a appointment on monday with the specialists to discuss the next steps, but I'm just glad that I can finally look at getting it sorted

    x

  • Hmmm sorry to hear your results are worse than first thought, can I ask was that result different to the CT scan then? Reason I ask is that I have lots of stomach ache and general aching ( like you're about to get flu) and do in a way I was surprised nothing showed up in stomach on CT scan, can PET scan show more that a CT scan can't? Don't want to overly worry but just want to be prepared that that might be the case?
Glad to hear you're seeing specialist soon and hopefully then you'll get a treatment plan TC x

  • Hiya so today found out it is Hodgkin's lymphoma, loads of scans and more blood tests but due to start ABVD treatment on the 15th, given so much info today my mind is blown! And I will lose my hair which I'm gutted about but just got to get on with it, pet scan tomorrow... have you anymore news?

  • Hey  :)

I get where you're coming from with having your mind blown, I've just had a consultation with the specialist to discuss the results of the PET scan and to sign the consent forms, and I actually got a headache from all the information I was given! Lol. Were you told that you will lose your hair? I was told that hair loss is a sad effect of the chemo, but as everyone is different we might not all get the same side effects, so try not to worry about it yet. I think it's the sickness that will get me down if I get it, but at the moment I'm crossing each bridge when I get to it. I'm trying not to worry about something until I have to as I think it will get me down.

Good luck for the PET scan, I hope it goes/went ok  :)

Coincidentally, I am having my first treatment of chemo on the 15th as well, and the second treatment on the 2nd. We were given a "tour" of the ward, which was a bit unsettling, but it was good to see what goes on during the day.

      wishing you well

    X

  • Just thought I would chip in as I have just read your messages since my last post.

So sorry for your diagnosises (is that even a word?!) But I know you'll both smash this.

    All the best xx

  • Hiya,

Thanks for the vote of confidence  :) it's that kind of positive attitude and reassurance that we all could do with from time, especially at times like these.

Lol, I'm pretty sure that diagnosises isn't a word, but I'll take it  :p Hope you're doing well,

    Wishing you well  x

  • Hello,

    I hope you are okay.

My boyfriend has just come back from the doctors after going in with a swollen lymph node on the front of his neck. I am very scared as the doctor has said he has suspected cancer and he has to go to the ENT unit on Tuesday for further tests. He also suffers badly with night sweats and has swollen nodes in his groin area also. He used to have very small swollen lympnodes on his neck but they came and went and thought nothing of it. He is early 20s. As his new lump is so big (size of strawberry) he went to the doctors today about it and that is what they said Doctors were very concerned. I am so terrified. I haven't stopped thinking about it

  • Hi there

I am ok thanks, considering the situation. How are you?

It seems like tough times for and I have my fingers crossed that it's nothing serious. It does sound like these are the symptoms of cancer, however I am not a doctor so don't take my word for. the swollen gland were the biggest sign of my cancer, which is a called Hodgkins Lymphoma, a type of cancer common to young adults in their early 20's. The night sweats are something I have never had, however it is something that could be a symptom.

I hope that it is nothing serious, but from the information I have been given is that Hodgkins lymphoma is a curable cancer with a high success rate. Make sure you chase up any results from appointments that seem to take too long, as it was around 6 weeks before I was diagnosed.

Keep well, and let me know how you get on

  • Hello,

I'm glad you are okay. I'm trying to stay strong but I am struggling. This must be a very hard time for you, but your positivity is inspiring. My boyfriend only went to the doctors on Friday so I'm still quite overwhelmed.

thank you so much for getting back to me. Yes with his symptoms it does sound like he has cancer. :( although I am unsure what cancer exactly. Where about were your swollen lympnodes ? How did they feel? I'm so sorry you are going through this.

the appointment is next week in the ENT unit so I will keep you updated as it would be great to talk to someone who is going through something similar.

    thank you again x
