Thyroid cancer

Hi In July I had a partial thyroidectomy to have a cyst removed. I had an ultrasound and they said they were confident it was absolutely nothing to worry about and the only reason they'd removed it would be because it was pushing against my throat and was uncomfortable. I went for my follow up appointment on my own and just wanted to ask abiut my scar as it's really painful one side only to be told they had in fact found cancer. Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma 8mm. He said treatment would be to remove it, which they had and I would have to have 6 monthly scans. As you can imagine this has all be such a shock after being told all along it was nothing sinister, and feel like I've just been left to get on with it. My Dr is disgusting how I've been treated with no follow up appointment to ask questions etc especially as I was on my own. Looking at some medical research, it looks like total thyroidectomy is recommended with checking the lymph nodes. Has anyone had any experience please? I have since made another appointment to see my consultant at the end of the month.

  • Hi,

im so sorry hear about what you are going through! Please could I ask what kind of symptoms you were getting before being diagnosed? I have been suffering with a severe sore throat/ neck for 4 months and bad ear pain etc. I have had a blood test and examination. I feel as though they aren't taking me seriously and not believing me when I say I'm in pain. I have now been left with nothing to help me until my Second appointment in two weeks.
I don't know what to do

  • Hi, sorry to hear that you're going through this.  With me I found a large lump in my neck and was getting bad throats where I would lose my voice completely. I also get ear ache but more down the side of my neck. The cyst was confirmed by an ultrasound, the cyst hid the cancer which was why they didn't see it. Hope this helps and they are able to help you.

  • Thank you so so much!
That really helps me and I'm sure will put me at some ease. I wish you all the best!

  • Hi SophLouise, how did you get on? Please let me know our symptoms are similar.. Am in pain with my thyroid swollen and throbbing for at least 3 weeks now along with ear pain. I also feel generally rubbish with aches and pains, stinging eyes, and very tired. Finally got an earlier blood test today cos I called the GP surgery to say it was no better and still painful so they found a cancellation. A previous appointment thry told me to get a blood test and it would all be fine, not the end of the world and sometimes our glands swell up for no reason. I just feel rotten with the pain, it moves from one side to the other and is now more swollen on the right. I feel they could have helped me more at my doctors. Please let me know how you are now. G

  • Hi,

I have had similar symptoms to you. However mine has been going on since June time and I've also had episodes of being sick and having diarrhoea often, but a bloody, dark colour. Sorry for the details :/ my throat is very red and my tonsils are swollen. I have a sense of feeling that there is a lump in my throat and struggle to swollow. After seeing the ENT they didn't seem that bothered but have sent me to have X rays and a swallow test. Which is in 2 weeks time so will be able to let you know. I would say wait until you receive blood test results as they tend to rule out any problems. But don't get your hopes up about finding the problem out as only having it for 3 weeks they will just say it's a viral thing and your glands are still swollen after fighting the infection.  If it continues for another 4 weeks I would go back to your GP.
hope your feeling okay though. If you have anymore questions just ask.

  • Hi SophLouise, thanks for replying! I wonder if they can prescribe anything for your symptoms? It sounds miserable but that's not esp. helped when you feel they are not taking it seriously.  I got results from blood tests and it says I am hyperthyroid and I think it is due to thyroiditis, maybe from a virus whereas they say it may be from Graves disease.  They're referring me to a specialist and done a thyroid antibody test but am not convinced I have Graves disease, as I don't think it is usually painful.  I had a friend with it who had a goitre but it didnt notice it until it was really big, as it didn't produce pain.  I suppose everyone is different.  I wish they could give something for the symptoms as I don't feel up to being at work but it is hard to explain as it's not flu or anything like that.  Best wishes, take care.

  • Aw I'm glad you have got some sort of answer. I thought I had something like hyperthyroidism but my test  came back clear, but I guess that was about 3 months ago now. Can I ask what Graves' disease is? It's so frustrating everyone is finding out their problems but no one can get to the bottom of mine I'm in so much pain today to the point I haven't eaten a thing. I hope I get answers soon.
    Get well soon! X
