Oesophageal cancer

Hi everyone.  I have just been diagnosed with stage 3 oesophageal cancer and been googling it.  I know it's wrong and have scared myself silly.  I am still waiting for lymph node biopsies and hopefully then get treatment plan.  I am only 63 and scared.  Anyone else in same predicament..  how is you treatment plan going.  I am so scared I am going to die as I'm not unwell ,,,

  • Hi ChristyB

I know exactly how you are feeling as I was diagnosed with stage 3 oesophageal cancer January 2018. I too looked at Google and was filled with all sorts of thoughts and let me tell you what happened to me.

I had my diagnosis then I had a feeding tube fitted as I was finding it more difficult to swallow.

After 6 weeks I started on my chemo, four cycles over 8 weeks. Then I was told that my tumour had shrunk, boy was as pleased. Then I had my oesophagectomy and some lymph nodes removed as well. After 6 weeks I had yet more chemo, same as before. During that time I was up and down with positive and negative thoughts, you really do evaluate what you have done and what you want to do with the rest of your life.

The best thing is that I have got through the treatment and my new way of living with no stomach. Yes it's hard and I do still have some negative thoughts but with the right team and treatment you have a really good chance of getting through this.

Do what I did; I stopped looking at Google about my cancer and instead looked at treatment and support.

If you are offered an oesophagectomy, take it and get yourself strong before the surgery. I went for longer and longer walks every day and increased my overnight feeds as well. I went into hospital as fit as I could, knowing that this would help.

lm now 54 and living my best life, enjoying each day as much as I can. When I have a dark day I try and pick myself up with the thought that tomorrow will be a better day.

Right I'm waffling on a bit now so if you want any advice, please reach out to me and I'll help as much as I can.

Take care and stop Googling ;-)

  • Hi ChristyB

My mam was told today that she has oesophageal cancer which has spread to her bones. Absolutely heartbreaking.

We’re waiting to meet with her oncology consultant next week regarding chemo etc.

Trying to stay positive however it’s so tough. She’s great in herself so taking it one day at a time.

I’m a nurse and tell my patients not to google anything however I it’s easier said than done.

Good luck with everything. I’ll be thinking of you

    Tricia x
