Helping my mum with her glioblastoma

Good morning,

On Thursday 10th October my mum (56) was diagnosed with GBM having had a short history of severe headaches and some confusion and word finding issues.

Mum has a tumour in the left ‘parietal occipital’ region that we have been told cannot be operated on owing to where it is and what that bit of the brain does, and a small lesion on the right in a similar area as there is a lot of oedema there.  Mum is on dexamethasone and the plan is for her to have 6 doses of radiotherapy over the next two weeks.

Mum is doing well, walking around unaided and carrying out day to day housework with little problem.

We are in shock, but from that is born a need to be proactive and so I have looked at ‘gamma knife’ as a possible way of helping mum and also immunotherapy...does anyone have any practical knowledge of additional therapies that have proved helpful? How did you go about making further enquiries? Directly to the centre or through oncology? We are optimistic but realistic about what can be done.

Mum is keen to try something and my brother and I want to help mum as much as we can - she has always looked after us so beautifully and I now need to help her.

thank you x

  • Hi Mrs_CFC,

Welcome to Cancer Chat, although I'm very sorry to read about your mum and what has brought you here. I can only imagine how tough this is for all of you.

It is generally best to discuss medical options with your mum's doctor, however if there are others on here with similar experience in the areas you mention then hopefully they will be along soon - my reply here will boost your post so that more people will see it.

It sounds like you've adopted a good attitude and I understand it is natural to want to find out as much as possible about options.

If you want to discuss anything with our nurses at anytime, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
